Vikings: How Old Lagertha Is At The Start & When She Dies
Vikings introduced many memorable warriors and shieldmaidens, and one that quickly became a fan favorite is Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), Ragnar’s first wife and mother of Björn Ironside, but how old was she at the beginning of Vikings and when she died? Among the most popular historical dramas in recent years is Michael Hirst’s Vikings, which premiered on History Channel in 2013. Vikings lived on for a total of six seasons and came to an end in December 2020, and by then, most of its most beloved characters were already gone.
Vikings initially followed legendary Norse figure Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and his travels and raids alongside his Viking brothers, among them his real brother, Rollo (Clive Standen), and his best friend and Kattegat’s boat builder Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård). As the series progressed, it shifted its focus to Ragnar’s sons, who took the lead of the series after Ragnar’s death in season 4. Although Vikings’ lead character was gone, many other characters close to him made it to the final season, such as Lagertha, who even though didn’t live a long life, she fought many battles, mostly personal ones.
How Old Lagertha Is At The Beginning Of Vikings
Lagertha was a fierce shield-maiden, Queen of Kattegat, mother of Björn Ironside, and the first wife of Ragnar Lothbrok. By the time the events of Vikings begin, Lagertha and Ragnar were married and had two children – Björn Ragnarsson and Gyda Ragnarsdottir, though the latter died in Vikings season 1 during the plague – but in season 2, her marriage came to an end after Aslaug arrived and revealed she was pregnant with Ragnar’s child. According to sources dedicated to Vikings, when the audience met Lagertha, she was around 29-31 years old, while Ragnar was around 30 years old. Unlike other characters in Vikings, Lagertha doesn’t have a real-life counterpart that can be used to calculate her age in the series, as just like Ragnar, Lagertha is believed to not have existed, and instead is just a character created for tales and myths.
How Old Lagertha Is When She Dies In Vikings
Lagertha is one of few characters from Vikings season 1 to have made it to the final season, but unfortunately, she didn’t make it to the final episode of the series. Lagertha was killed in Vikings season 6 episode “Death and the Serpent”, but the series’ timeline got confusing with each passing season, and the characters didn’t age as they were supposed to, creating various inconsistencies, mostly when it comes to their ages. Lagertha’s age when she died in Vikings is listed as 55, though she should have been older, especially when comparing her age to that of Ragnar when he died two seasons earlier.
Why Vikings Killed Off Lagertha In Season 6
Lagertha’s death in Vikings season 6 was one of the most shocking and heartbreaking moments of the season. After killing White Hair, a severely wounded Lagertha rode back to Kattegat and arrived at Hvitserk’s home. However, Hvitserk was in a state of delirium and hallucinated a serpent he believed was his brother, Ivar, and so he stabbed it, but he was actually attacking Lagertha. The shield-maiden passed away as a result of these and her battle wounds, and her funeral was shown in the next episode. As for a behind-the-scenes reason, Winnick shared that the writers of Vikings didn’t want to kill her, but she knew Lagertha’s time was coming to an end, and she wanted her to have an epic and heart-wrenching death.
