How House Of The Dragon's Viserys Targaryen Is Related To Daenerys' Brother
Game of Thrones' Viserys Targaryen shares the name of the king in House of the Dragon season 1, with the two figures being distantly related.

How House Of The Dragon's Viserys Targaryen Is Related To Daenerys' Brother

House of the Dragon’s prequel story depicts the first notable Viserys Targaryen, who is a distantly related ancestor to Daenerys’ same-named brother in Game of Thrones. Taking place about 200 years before Game of Thrones’ timeline, House of the Dragon will chronicle a momentous era in House Targaryen’s family history at the height of their reign in Westeros. While the two characters will be wildly different in terms of their personalities and impact, House of the Dragon continues the franchise’s notable name confusions, as the prequel’s King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) inspired the moniker of Game of Thrones’ antagonistic Viserys Targaryen.

While the Targaryens will make up a significant portion of House of the Dragon’s characters, only three remained during Game of Thrones’ timeline. Game of Thrones’ premiere introduced the last two descendants of House Targaryen, Viserys and his younger sister Daenerys. While Viserys was intent on reclaiming his rightful place on the Iron Throne during Game of Thrones season 1, Daenerys simply wanted to return home, with the elder Targaryen’s cruelty and arrogance landing him an early death by a crown of molten silver, gifted by Daenerys’ husband, Khal Drogo.

Game of Thrones’ ending suggests that Harry Lloyd’s Viserys Targaryen will be the last figure in Westeros to ever carry that name, though his antagonistic nature certainly didn’t do justice to the more peaceful House of the Dragon figure with the same moniker. Daenerys’ brother in Game of Thrones was the great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandson of House of the Dragon’s King Viserys I Targaryen. Had Game of Thrones’ Viserys successfully made his way onto the Iron Throne as he had planned, he would have been designated King Viserys III Targaryen, as the grandson of House of the Dragon’s Viserys became the second king of that name.

Why Daenerys’ Brother Has The Same Name As House Of The Dragon’s Viserys Targaryen In Game Of Thrones

Much like the other noble families of Westeros in Game of Thrones’ universe, House Targaryen frequently reused historic names throughout their family line. House of the Dragon’s King Viserys I Targaryen wasn’t even the first figure in the family to be called this name, as his great uncle, the brother of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, was given this same moniker beforehand. There are plenty of male and female Targaryen names that were used numerous times before Game of Thrones’ characters first appeared, with Daenerys Targaryen having also been the name of her great-great-great aunt. Jon Snow’s true name of Aegon Targaryen was also used on countless occasions within the family, as at least seven other male Targaryens were given this name as a tribute to Aegon the Conqueror.

Daenerys’ brother, being named Viserys Targaryen, thus follows the family’s tradition, especially since the moniker was given further significance through two Westerosi kings. This is also why House of the Dragon’s King Viserys I Targaryen inspired the name of his daughter Rhaenyra Targaryen’s youngest son. The grandson of House of the Dragon’s Viserys would become King Viserys II Targaryen following the death of his brother, King Aegon III Targaryen, with the name only being used again once given to Daenerys’ older brother. However, House of the Dragon will finally reclaim the name Viserys Targaryen after it was tarnished by Game of Thrones’ character, as the prequel’s King Viserys is a more sympathetic and tragic figure.
