Dungeons & Dragons Movie Reveals First Look At Cast In Costume at Comic-Con

The first look at the characters from Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves in costume has been revealed at Comic-Con 2022. Dungeons & Dragons is a classic tabletop roleplaying game that was created by Gary Gygax and originally released in 1974. The property, which includes a wide variety of creatures and magic within its expansive lore, was previously adapted into a film in 2000. Although that movie was not an eminent success, it received two sequels: One a TV movie in 2005, and one that went direct-to-DVD in 2012. The game was recently brought to the forefront of pop culture yet again by its inclusion in the retro fantasy-horror Netflix series Stranger Things.

The cinematic wing of the franchise went dormant after the 2012 film while the new project Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves seemed stuck in production hell. However, the film is finally coming to screens on March 3, 2023. This iteration of the project was directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, from a script they co-wrote with Michael Gilio.

Comic-Con 2022 is going on in San Diego this weekend after a two-year hiatus, and Screen Rant (and sister sites cbr.com and collider.com) are there in force. Tonight is preview night and we’re taking an early look at several of the key activations before they open to the public, including ones for SeveranceHouse of the Dragon, and of courseParamount’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Take a look at the clips we recorded that showcase the film’s cast in costume, including Chris Pine, Sophia Lillis, Justice Smith, Michelle Rodriguez, Hugh Grant, and Bridgerton breakout star Regé-Jean Page.

Hugh Grant’s Dungeons & Dragons Character

So far, not much is known about the characters that each Dungeons & Dragons cast member will be playing. However, these costumes give a potential glimpse at what D&D archetypes each character will inhabit. For instance, it seems that Pine’s character may be a bard, considering he is depicted playing a lute as if it’s an electric guitar. Rodriguez is likely playing a warrior, which fits her typical performance style, and it seems that Page may be playing a rogue, given his smaller, more agile weapon. Lillis and Smith’s characters will be the ones to bring the magic, while Grant’s character seems to be a sagacious professorial type.

The theatrical release of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is now less than a year away. It is more than likely that the upcoming panel covering the film (which is scheduled tomorrow at noon PST) will be when they drop much more information about what fans can expect. While they can only hope for more character details to be dropped soon, it may even be possible that a Dungeons & Dragons teaser trailer is on the horizon. Stay tuned for Screen Rant’s exclusive interviews at Comic-Con with the cast!
