Mayans M.C. Season 5 Renewed By FX

FX revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2022 that Mayans M.C. season 5 has officially on the way! The series is a spinoff of Sons of Anarchy, which aired on FX from 2008 through 2014. Sons of Anarchy followed the trials and tribulation of a gun-running motorcycle club in Central California known as SAMCRO, or Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original. One of their competing gangs, the Latin motorcycle club known as the Mayans, got their own spinoff which began airing in 2018. Mayans M.C. began around two-and-a-half years after the finale of Sons of Anarchy, following the dangerous path toward vengeance taken by J. D. Pardo’s character EZ Reyes.

The cast of Mayans M.C. also includes Clayton Cardenas, Sarah Bolger, Michael Irby, Carla Baratta, Richard Cabral, Raoul Max Trujillo, Danny Pino, and Edward James Olmos. Mayans M.C. season 4, which heralded an even darker turn for EZ, premiered on FX on April 19, 2022, running for 10 episodes through June 14, 2022. While this might not be the best path for him, he eventually assumed leadership of the motorcycle club by the end of the season, which included a climactic battle with SAMCRO.

Today is the closing day of San Diego Comic-Con 2022, and one of the biggest presentations in Hall H of the day was Mayans M.C., which featured a screening and a Q&A. During the Q&A portion, it was announced that Mayans M.C. season 5 has officially been renewed by FX. FX Entertainment’s President of Original Progreamming Nick Grad described the season as “an explosive fifth season that will test their very survival under EZ’s newly claimed leadership.”

Although this renewal announcement has come rather quickly after the season 4 finale (just 1 month and 10 days to be exact), it’s actually one of the longest periods the show has taken to be renewed. Other than a several-month wait following season 2, the show has made a habit of being renewed for a new season before the finale of the previous season even airs. The reason for the delay in this case is probably the fact that they wanted to wait to make the announcement at Comic-Con, rather than the network being skittish about the renewal.

At the rate it’s currently going, Mayans M.C. will likely run just as long as Sons of Anarchy did, and perhaps even longer. The show clearly has captured the attention of a wide audience, as the packed Hall H presentation proved earlier today. If the show can continue its hit rate of such swift renewals, there is a bright future ahead for fans of the show, even as EZ’s own future gets darker and darker.
