I Genuinely Can’t Watch These Teen Movies The Same Way After Learning These 16 Behind-The-Scenes Facts

1. Joey King was apparently totally stoned out of her mind when she and Joel Courtney filmed the boardwalk scene in The Kissing Booth 3.

In the first film, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Han appears briefly as a teacher/chaperone during one of Lara Jean’s flashbacks to a homecoming dance. In the sequel, P.S. I Still Love You, she plays a teacher who comforts a student who’s crying in the cafeteria. And finally, in the third film, she appears as Principal Cho in a flashback scene showing how Lara Jean and Peter met at school as little kids.

3. Tim Meadows, who played Principal Duvall in Mean Girls, actually broke his wrist a week before filming started. As a result, they decided to write it into his character.

Paramount Pictures

In an interview with Cosmopolitan, director Mark Waters explained: “Tim broke his wrist a week before shooting and thought he had to drop out, then Tina [Fey] said: ‘We’ll just write a little joke about you having carpal tunnel syndrome.’ It’s bizarre because no one comments on the fact he was wearing a cast for the whole movie.”

4. Heathers had several alternate endings pitched. In an interview with Yahoo, writer Daniel Waters revealed that in the first draft, “[Veronica] kills J.D. in the boiler room, walks away from the high school, turns around, and she’s wearing the bomb. So she blows herself up to save the sins of the high school.”

Another ending apparently saw J.D. successfully blowing up the school, followed by the students enjoying a “prom” in heaven. However, studios reportedly found it too dark.

5. Also in Heathers, the character Heather Chandler says the now-famous line, “Did you have a brain tumor for breakfast?” The actor, Kim Walker, actually subsequently died of a brain tumor in 2001.

6. There’s a Cruel Intentions scene where Annette (Reese Witherspoon) and Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe) are in a heated argument, and she slaps him. The slap was actually improvised by Witherspoon.

Columbia Pictures

Phillippe also reportedly threw up after the scene because it was so intense to film.

If you spent any time on Wattpad (or Tumblr) in the last decade, you probably already knew this. But if you didn’t, well, now you know!

Hardin’s character was Harry Styles in the original fic. “It was more along the lines of a modern-day Pride and Prejudice and Wuthering Heights than anything to do with the actual Harry Styles,” Todd said in an interview with StyleCaster.

8. Kristen Stewart had to wear a Volturi cape any time they paused filming the wedding scene in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part I because they didn’t want her dress to get leaked before the movie came out.

Summit Entertainment

In an interview with Cineplex-Movies at ComicCon, Stewart explained: “It was a huge deal keeping this [dress] shrouded. I was wearing a Volturi cape most of the time and I hated it. You know, you want to feel pretty on your wedding day and every time they called cut, someone would come and attack you with a Volturi cape and you’re like, ‘Where am I?'”

9. Dylan O’Brien almost lost out on the role of Thomas for The Maze Runner because of his haircut.

In an interview with Collider, O’Brien explained that he didn’t hear back for about a month and a half after his audition. “Wes [Ball, the director] was like, ‘His hair is too MTV!’ That’s what he thought, which was so funny,” O’Brien said. “Then he saw a picture of me with more regular hair, the buzzcut or something from Teen Wolf, and he brought me back and it worked. It just ended up working out.”

10. You know the famous parade scene in Ferris Bueller? So, it turns out that was a real parade. The filmmakers snuck the movie’s float into it and just started filming.

Director John Hughes explained in the DVD commentary: “It was an actual parade which we put our float into — unbeknownst to really anybody. Nobody knew what it was.”

In an interview with Elvis Duran, Mendes revealed that he was invited to audition for the character, but was unable to because of his schedule: “I would’ve loved to. Unfortunately, timing didn’t work out. It would’ve been amazing!”

The part ultimately went to Nick Robinson.

13. Nina Dobrev, who played Candace in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, filmed a scene where her character has an abortion (which happens in the book). However, the storyline was ultimately cut from the film.

In an interview with Hypable, Stephen Chbosky (director and author of the book) explained: “There’s a lovely subplot that involves Charlie’s sister, that Nina Dobrev was so brilliant in. It was the last thing [that got cut] and it broke my heart because it was just too much for the movie.”

Here’s the full deleted scene:

Paramount Pictures

In an interview with Vogue, director and writer Amy Heckerling explained: “[Silverstone] had the script and she was doing her lines and as soon as I said ‘cut,’ the script woman and everyone in the crew started to walk up to her to tell her the right pronunciation and I had to run interference and go, ‘Step away from the actress. Stand clear of Alicia Silverstone.’ Because I didn’t want her to know that she had it wrong, I wanted that assurance without her thinking this is funny or a joke — which changes how you say things. There’s something you do when you’re completely confident that just can’t be replicated when you know you’re doing something wrong.”

In an interview with Interview Magazine, Heckerling explained: “I was the last person that I was aware of to lose their virginity of my friends and the people I knew in school, and I failed the driving test five times when I got to Los Angeles. So that’s how I felt. [That line] was purely personal.”

16. And finally, Emma Stone said she had a “little asthma attack” while filming the Easy A scene where her character, Olive, and Brandon pretend to have sex.

In an interview with MTV News, Stone explained: “I had a little asthma attack, without any prior knowledge that I had asthma, during the scene where we had to jump up and down for hours and hours screaming and yelling on the bed. [It] was humiliating, because it was the second day of shooting.”

“Oh, for the love, I can’t even simulate sex without dying!” Stone said.
