A hidden Resident Evil trailer for the Netflix show reveals the cause of the new zombie outbreak as well as new and returning monsters. The series adaptation of Capcom’s survival horror franchise hails from Andrew Dabb, best known for his work on The CW’s Supernatural as a co-showrunner for its final four seasons and having written on it going back to season 5. Ella Balinska is leading the cast for Netflix’s Resident Evil show alongside Lance Reddick as franchise villain Albert Wesker, Turlough Convery, Paola Nuñez, Siena Agudong, Adeline Rudolph and Tamara Smart.

Resident Evil will chronicle two timelines, the earliest being in 2022 as half-twins Jade and Billie move to New Raccoon City with their father, Albert Wesker. Shortly after their arrival, they learn of his dark past and the dangerous experiments being conducted by the Umbrella Corporation, which will eventually lead to the truth of their origins and the downfall of the world. The second Resident Evil show timeline will be set in 2036 and follow Jade as she struggles to survive in the post-apocalyptic wasteland overrun with T-virus mutations while also haunted by her past.

With just a couple of months remaining until its release, Netflix unveiled the first Resident Evil show trailer. Hidden within the video was both a QR code and URL for “UmbrellaIsJoy.com“, which brings users to a hidden Resident Evil trailer revealing the cause of the new outbreak as well as new and returning monsters, including Lickers. The first Resident Evil trailer may have confirmed the existence of its dual timeline story, but kept the exact reasoning behind the outbreak mostly a secret, aside from brief teases of Reddick’s Albert Wesker conducting secretive lab experiments. The hidden trailer subsequently reveals that the outbreak stems from a new drug Wesker is developing for the Umbrella Corporation that works as an antidepressant and counter to OCD and anxiety, utilizing the dangerous T-virus to make it work. Given the T-virus is known for mutating humans into zombified creatures as well as animals and plants, it seems likely Wesker inadvertently is kicking off the apocalypse once again.

It is interesting to note that showrunner Andrew Dabb has confirmed that the Resident Evil show exists within the video game canon, subsequently raising questions as to Wesker being alive and his reasoning behind bringing back the T-virus. Given Wesker now has teenage daughters in the series, it could be speculated that he had better intentions with the Joy drug than fans of the franchise are used to seeing from the iconic villain, though with his extensive knowledge of the virus, it also seems likely he may have an ulterior motive behind his actions. Only time will tell what’s to come from Wesker and the new outbreak when Resident Evil hits Netflix on July 14.
