22 “Teen Wolf: The Movie” Behind-The-Scenes Facts We Just Learned From The Cast At San Diego Comic-Con

Teen Wolf stars Tyler Posey and Tyler Hoechlin, and creator Jeff Davis swung by Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con 2022 to chat about the upcoming movie and reveal some amazing behind-the-scenes secrets about bringing these characters back. Here’s everything we learned:

“I have so many of my best friends are from this show, genuinely,” Tyler began. “So, I’ve seen a lot of them consistently since we’ve finished the show, but to see everybody back on set, at the trailer getting hair and makeup done, getting into wardrobe, and calling them by their character’s names again, was such a crazy trip down memory lane. I think Posey and I probably hugged each other 50 or 60 times that first day. I think I said ‘I love you” to him more than I’ve ever said it to my family.”

4. And, Tyler Posey said once Tyler Hoechlin stepped onto set, “all of these emotions and memories” came flooding back and it felt “really special.”

Turning to Tyler Hoechlin at the panel, Tyler said, “You really helped bring this nostalgic vibe back every time I saw you. It’s true.”

5. Creator Jeff Davis said he never thought about doing just another season of Teen Wolf, but he started putting together ideas for where these characters could be, and it turned into a “very long movie because [they] essentially have 20 main characters.”

“Once I finished the script, it was about 138 pages, and I realized I wrote a short Season 7,” Jeff joked. “So, we’ll see how much of that lasts in the final cut, but it was really amazing to bring all the characters back and to revisit them.”

6. Jeff Davis also revealed that there will be a time jump when the movie kicks off, and this is the first time Tyler Posey’s Scott will actually be older than he is right now.

Tyler explained, “I’ve never been the same age as Scott. When we first started, he was 15 and I was 18.”

7. When Teen Wolf: The Movie picks up, Scott has left Beacon Hills behind and he’s now living in Los Angeles. Tyler Posey teased that we see Scott as a “normal person” when the movie begins.

“Beacon Hills kind of messed Scott up. Beacon Hills was a fucking wild ride. So Scott wanted to step away, so he lives in Los Angeles now,” Tyler began. “We wanted to get away from Beacon Hills, he wanted to put the leadership role on the shelf for a little while. So when we pick up with him, he’s kind of a normal person. He still works at the vet. He’s lonely. He’s an adult and he’s going through what all of us have gone through as adults. Scott deals with the reality of what it is to be an actual human instead of a superhero werewolf saving the world constantly.”

8. Tyler Posey revealed that one of his favorite things about the movie is that Scott is able to “pass the torch” to another teen, specifically Eli Hale, Derek’s son.

“I was finally an adult,” Tyler began. “It felt really good to kind of step into that role. I didn’t have to show my naked body, which was really cool too. There might be one scene where you see my chest.”

9. Tyler Hoechlin said returning to do the movie was a different experience than when he left the series and then returned to finish Derek’s storyline. He said that the first time he left everyone was still working on the show, but this time everybody was having a reunion together.

“Everybody had kind of gone and experienced life without Teen Wolf for a little bit. So it felt much more like a shared experience, as opposed to my experience coming back to the show. I think just coming back to these characters in such different places in their lives, and we’re in different places in our lives than when we left. There’s just something special about that,” he explained.

10. Jeff Davis recalled a very surreal moment seeing the cast together again for the first time when Tyler Posey, Colton Haynes, and JR Bourne went to his office and read some scenes for the first time.

“They hadn’t read the script yet. I just told them a little bit about it,” Jeff began. “We started reading the scenes together and we all sort of had tingles because it felt like there was a resurgence of magic in the air.”

11. Vince Mattis will star in Teen Wolf: The Movie as Derek Hale’s son Eli, and Tyler Hoechlin was instrumental in helping cast Vince. In fact, Tyler is an executive producer on the movie as well and did all the auditions with every young actor who was brought in to read for Eli.

“With the casting process, I got to watch all the tapes for the new characters, and specifically for Eli, going through those, I saw Vince and just, for whatever reason, [he] felt like he was the guy. We read a lot of really talented young actors and Jeff was kind enough to let me direct them in our little chemistry reads that we did over Zoom,” Tyler explained. “[Vince] did such a great job on the film and I’m so proud of him and we were lucky to have him.”

12. Also, Tyler Hoechlin said he brought his experience as a child actor to the audition process for Eli Hale. He specifically remembered how “gracious” Tom Hanks and Paul Newman were to him when he was starting out, and he wanted to be that kind of role model for these young actors.

“I remember how gracious Tom [Hanks] was when I was playing in Road to Perdition. I had Paul Newman. I had really great examples when I was a kid and I’m very, very lucky for that,” Tyler recalled. “Talking about that film, that’s usually what I refer to now. How grateful I am to have had those examples and mentors when I was that young, so I tried to pay that forward and pass it on the best I can.”

13. Tyler Posey said reuniting with Crystal Reed on Teen Wolf: The Movie was “perfect” and it really called back to the “beginning of Teen Wolf” and where all the “love and passion” for the series began. Tyler also remarked that it was great getting to know Crystal again as adults.

“Being able to work with her again just brought everything back. It was just perfect. It was exactly what we wanted as a show. We wanted to be there with each other from the very beginning. So getting to work with her again was awesome,” he began. “We’ve grown up since we really hung out with each other and so finding out that our interests are similar and just getting to know her again as a person was just awesome.”

14. And, Jeff David revealed that when he texted Crystal Reed that he would like to bring Allison back for the movie, she just “burst into tears,” and then they talked on the phone and he revealed some of his plans for the character.

“I always said if I was going to do a movie, one of the characters I would bring back is Allison,” Jeff recalled.

15. Also, in terms of Scott getting to see Allison again, Tyler Posey said, “It fucking rocks his world, dude.”

He continued, saying, “He doesn’t really know what to think. You’ll see. It’s hard to say much.”

16. Jeff Davis said it was “exciting” to get to bring back these characters we had said goodbye to in the original series, but he also wanted to make sure he did the characters justice and that [he] got the voice[s] correct again.”

He explained that in order to prepare for the movie, he went back and watched scenes from the original series.

17. Teasing Colton Haynes’s return as Jackson in the movie, Jeff Davis said it was “really fun to write his scenes again because it’s the same old Jackson.”

MTV

“He gets a lot of the humor. He gets a lot of the snarky remarks,” Jeff said.

18. In terms of if filming the movie was different than shooting the series, Jeff Davis said it was “pretty much the same” since they shot Teen Wolf like a movie “every week.”

Jeff joked that they were always “way too ambitious” with their budget on the series, and that ambition carries over to the movie as well.

19. Tyler Posey’s brother, Jesse Posey, will appear in Teen Wolf: The Movie. Jeff Davis teased that they gave Jesse a “funny role” and he’s “fucking hilarious.”

Tyler joked, “My brother’s the best part of the movie.”

20. Looking back at his entire time on Teen Wolf overall, Tyler Posey said that he owes “a lot” to the series and he has been given so many opportunities because of it.

Teen Wolf really helped me become the person I am today,” he began. “I went through a lot of hard times during the filming of Teen Wolf. My mom passed away seven years ago. So it was during the middle of Teen Wolf, and just having that be with me, not so much a distraction, but something that was always there with me. I hold Teen Wolf close to my heart, really intensely.”

21. Tyler Posey and Jeff Davis hilariously revealed that “there’s swearing” in the movie. Tyler joked, “We say ‘fuck’ in Teen Wolf: The Movie.”

22. And finally, according to Jeff Davis, there is already discussion of doing more Teen Wolf.
