Screen Talk 395: From "Emily the Criminal" to "Funny Pages," the best movies of the summer weren't the obvious ones.

The Hidden Gems of the Summer Movie Season

As the summer movie season draws to a close, “Top Gun: Maverick” stands out as the big hit of the past several months, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. There were plenty of other box office successes, from “Thor: Love and Thunder” to “The Black Phone,” but many other releases deserved just as much attention.

In this week’s episode of Screen Talk, Eric Kohn is joined by film executive editor Kate Erbland to discuss some of those hidden gems, from “Emily the Criminal” to “Funny Pages,” as well as some of the summer duds. Erbland also addresses the state of the MCU and how women directors fared in recent months.

At the start of the episode, Kohn is joined by IndieWire box office reporter Tom Brueggemann to discuss the summer box office and what it might indicate about the future of theaters.
