Obi-Wan Kenobi Trailer Secretly Teased Another Jedi Hiding On Tatooine

While few details about the plot of the upcoming miniseries have been released, the most recent Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer may have hinted that there is a second Jedi hiding on Tatooine. Set to premiere on May 27, 2022, Obi-Wan Kenobi will take place ten years after the end of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. After failing to stop Anakin Skywalker from turning to the dark side and becoming Darth Vader, Obi-Wan went into exile on Tatooine. There, he watched over Luke Skywalker as he grew up with his step-uncle, Owen Lars, and step-aunt, Beru Lars.

Although the Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer gave audiences their first glimpse of Darth Vader’s return to the screen, the Inquisitors still seemed to be the main threat. Introduced in the animated series Star War Rebels, the Inquisitors are a group of warriors who use the dark side of the Force to hunt down any Jedi who survived Order 66. Much of the trailer focuses on the Inquisitors’ activities, showing both their base at the Fortress Inquisitorius and their fighting skills on other planets. Early in the trailer, Obi-Wan even tells someone, “They’re coming. Stay hidden,” as the video shows several Inquisitors marching through Mos Eisley.

However, the Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer already made it clear that Owen wants nothing to do with Obi-Wan or training Luke to be a Jedi. Due to this, it seems unlikely that Obi-Wan would need to specifically instruct Owen to hide from the Inquisitors. Instead, one trailer breakdown (via YouTube) argues that Obi-Wan may have been speaking to another Jedi on Tatooine. If there is a second Jedi hiding on the planet, this would explain the Inquisitors’ presence on Tatooine and the identity of one of the characters.

Given that Obi-Wan was still living freely on Tatooine at the beginning of Star Wars: A New Hope, it seems unlikely that the Inquisitors successfully tracked Obi-Wan to the planet. This raises the question of why the Inquisitors traveled to Tatooine at all. According to the trailer breakdown, the answer is that the Inquisitors may be hunting a different Jedi who happened to stop on Tatooine. If Obi-Wan senses the other Jedi survivor’s presence, he may seek out and find the Jedi first, issuing his warning to hide. This could also explain why Obi-Wan eventually travels off-world during Obi-Wan Kenobi – another Jedi needing his help would certainly prompt that.

In addition, the inclusion of a second Jedi would explain Kumail Nanjiani’s character in Obi-Wan Kenobi. Best known for movies like Eternals and The Big Sick, Nanjiani has been cast in Obi-Wan Kenobi, but his role is currently unknown. So far, Nanjiani has only been in one shot of the Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer. In his brief appearance, though, Nanjiani seemed to be wearing a signature brown Jedi robe, suggesting that he may be the other Jedi on Tatooine. While it may seem too coincidental for a second Jedi to end up on Tatooine during Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Force may have brought Obi-Wan and Nanjiani’s character together to face the Inquisitors and protect young Luke Skywalker.
