Spinal Tap II!!!!
On the heels of the news that A Simple Favor is getting a sequel—do you think they’ll call it A Simple Favor 2: An Even Simpler Favor?—comes the EVEN BIGGER NEWS that iconic mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap is also getting a sequel. The whole band is getting back together, with Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) returning, along with however many doomed souls they’ve recruited to be Tap’s drummer. Also returning is Rob Reiner, who will both direct the film, as he did the original, and star as film-within-the-film documentarian Marty DiBergi. I guess this means Spinal Tap II will be another mockumentary.
I do not know how you top perfection, but if the crew behind A Simple Favor has my trust, then the crew behind Spinal Tap has my absolute blind faith they won’t f-ck this up. Reiner actually provided some details about the sequel, which is premised upon Spinal Tap needing to reunite to fulfill a contractual obligation by playing one last concert together, after they’ve spent years apart and stewing in mutual dislike. On top of that, it’s the fortieth anniversary of the documentary, which the bands hates, so Marty DiBergi gets another shot at capturing life with Tap. The sequel is set to be released in 2024, the real fortieth anniversary of This Is Spinal Tap. So, the sequel’s already got the kind of meta jokes that make Spinal Tap so great. If both Spinal Tap II and A Simple Favor 2 end up coming out in 2024, it will be my absolute favorite year ever, even though I think we’ll be fighting the bone wars by then.
