Ms. Marvel Star Compares Filming The Show & Captain Marvel 2
Iman Vellani, who will play the titular hero in the upcoming Ms. Marvel show, compares her experience filming for the series to filming for her role in Captain Marvel 2/The Marvels. Ms. Marvel will feature the debut of Vellani’s young Captain Marvel fanatic Kamala Khan as she becomes a superhero. Following the events of Ms. Marvel, Kamala will make the jump from Marvel television to a Marvel film when she joins Brie Larson as Captain Marvel and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau in the Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels.
Details about Captain Marvel 2 are even more scarce than details about Ms. Marvel, but the film is bound to feature some interesting relationship dynamics between the three leads. Kamala’s fascination with Captain Marvel inspires her to become a superhero, so a friendly teacher-student relationship between the two seems likely. However, Monica’s role in WandaVision confirmed that there is some hostility between her and Captain Marvel. When the two characters last interacted on-screen during Captain Marvel, the two were still close friends, so finding out what strained their relationship will likely be a key part of The Marvels.
As the promotional campaign for Ms. Marvel is beginning to ramp up in preparation for the series’ release, Vellani spoke with Empire about taking Kamala Khan from her series to a film role alongside Larson and Parris. She said the two experiences varied. Check out Vellani’s statement below.
“It was absolutely amazing, a completely different experience… You have the same amount of filming time almost to film a lot less content, so everything was more relaxed. And Brie and Teyonah were the most amazing support system, just to have people who have the same pains from doing stunts. We were just crying together. It’s awesome.”
Vellani is in an advantageous place when it comes to her role as Kamala Khan since she got to explore the origins of the character during Ms. Marvel before going on to share a leading role with Larson and Parris in The Marvels. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, for example, was introduced in the middle of Captain America: Civil War amidst an already brewing superhero feud filled with superstar actors. Captain Marvel and Monica have both been fleshed out in other MCU stories, so the same treatment for Kamala suggests that the three leads are all equally important.
Hints from Vellani about seeing Captain Marvel, Monica, and Kamala team up on-screen are very exciting. Captain Marvel has already proven herself as a force to be reckoned with after going toe-to-toe with Thanos (Josh Brolin) during Avengers: Endgame. Although Monica does not have a superhero alias yet, she interacted with the Scarlet Witch’s (Elizabeth Olsen) magic so much during WandaVision that she gained superpowers. While Kamala’s full powers have not been shown on-screen just yet, trailers for Ms. Marvel have begun to tease glimpses of her cosmic abilities. Clearly, these three superheroes will be quite the team if they end up working together following the events of Ms. Marvel, which hits Disney+ on June 8.
