While talking about her time in Hollywood, the 64-year-old revealed that while she had worked with several “difficult men” in her career, one instance frightened her. MacDowell recalled what she described as a “sea of men” on a movie set. The “Groundhog Day” actress said she was so “freaked out” that she dropped to her knees and took some time to compose herself.

MacDowell Had A Panic Attack On Set

MacDowell appeared in an interview with Marie Claire and opened up about her journey with her hair, having family in Hollywood, and her life as a woman in Hollywood. The 64-year-old actress also highlighted some experiences with male actors on set.

One included a panic attack and the actress dropping to her knees. MacDowell recalled a moment in 2016 when she arrived on the set of a movie, and “nobody seemed to care about the vagina[-grabbing] comment.”

She said, “I went to do a job, and I had my very first panic attack. I was getting ready to shoot something, and I turned around, and it’s, like, a roomful of men. Like, a sea of men. It flashed on something that was personal for me. And I dropped to my knees.” The view made the actress so faint that she had to leave the room.

After leaving the room, she went into the fake bathroom on set to calm herself down. “Get your s–t together,” she said to herself before heading back. “It just freaked me out, not seeing any other women.” After the incident, the actress revealed that she became even more conscious of looking for women on set.

MacDowell Taught Her Daughters To Care For Themselves

Further on in the interview, The “Maid” actress shed some light on her relationship with her two daughters, Margaret and Rainey Qualley, who are also in the movie industry. MacDowell revealed that she taught them how to “take care of themselves.”

“I’ve taught them how to take care of themselves,” she said. “I tried to teach them there are certain limits you can set. You’ve got to do self-care. It’s all about how you eat, protecting your sleep.” The actress recently co-starred with her youngest daughter, Margaret, in the Netflix series “Maid.”

While talking about their time on set, MacDowell said that her main concern while filming was always her daughter’s well-being. “I would see her on Sundays. She would come to my house, and I would feed her really healthy food, and she would get a massage. I organized that— I was getting a massage while she ate, and then she would get a massage, and I would do her lines with her.”

MacDowell Was In ‘Maid’

Since its release in October 2021, the Netflix show “Maid” has received rave reviews in addition to an almost perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The series is based on a memoir and had known faces like MacDowell and her daughter Margaret among the cast.

The duo reprised their real-life role as mother and daughter in the series. In an Instagram post, MacDowell talked about her experience on set with her daughter, describing it as an “extraordinary honor and an experience I will cherish forever.” The 64-year-old’s supporting role in the series earned her rave reviews and put her in the running for an Emmy award.

Movie critic Inkoo Kang posted a review via the Washington Post, talking about the mother-daughter dynamic and how the duo was “each other’s best scene partners.” He wrote, “Qualley and MacDowell are each other’s best scene partners, with the younger actor anchoring the production with emotional realism and the screen veteran arguably doing the most impressive work of her career, flitting through thoughts and moods; as quickly as the pages of a book.”

MacDowell Said She Used ‘Lots Of Conditioners’ For Her Hair

One of MacDowell’s most prominent features is the actress’ voluminous curls. After showcasing her hair while walking the Cannes Film Festival carpet, the 64-year-old appeared in an interview with People, talking about her hair and how she kept it that way.

She said, “I’m not worried about keeping it under control. We’ve emphasized the wildness. We’ve gone with that.” She added that she made use of “lots of conditioners” to maintain the curly texture of her mane. MacDowell said, “I just put conditioner in and leave it in there. If I’m not working, that’s all I do. I just sleep in it sometimes.”

The “Green Card” actress admitted that with her hair’s natural color, gray, it tended to get “a little drier” than usual, but she welcomed it all. She said, “Because of the silver, it gets even a little drier. The texture becomes even more wiry, but I’m embracing all of it. I’m comfortable. I like me. That’s where you get to by the time you’re my age.”
