Here’s How Elizabeth Olsen Collaborated With Writer Michael Waldron To Come Up With Wanda’s Story In “Doctor Strange 2”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is currently the latest Marvel project to take over the box office, as fans flock to see this Sam Raimi–directed movie. And while it is technically the second solo Doctor Strange movie, it’s hard to deny how important Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) is in the film.
Marvel / Disney+In fact, Elizabeth Olsen notably wrapped WandaVision and then flew to London two days later to start filming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Meaning she played Wanda Maximoff nonstop for nearly two years.

Marvel Studios / Via youtu.beIn an interview with BuzzFeed, Michael discussed how working alongside Elizabeth and writing for her was one of his favorite things about Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and how her “very specific” notes on Wanda’s arc helped a ton.
Kevin Mazur / Getty ImagesMichael explained, “Lizzie’s been playing Wanda a lot longer than I’ve been writing her, and she was coming right off of WandaVision, literally wrapping filming on that like a few days before, so she was so in tune with where Wanda’s story was. I really listened to her and tried to make sure that we weren’t doing anything out of step with where she thought the character was on her journey.”

Karwai Tang / WireImage / Getty ImagesIn terms of specific elements Elizabeth helped craft, Michael said she was instrumental in fleshing out Wanda’s ideas about being “reasonable” and calling out Doctor Strange for his actions that make him a hero but would make her a villain.

It’s like, after reading the Darkhold and after understanding her place and who she is supposed to be, Wanda really has an expanded notion of her place in the universe and who she’s meant to be. And yet, all she really wants is to just go eat ice cream with her children.”

She’s doing a lot of bad stuff in this movie. We worked with Lizzie to try and make sure there was justification for that built in.”
