Law & Order: Mariska Hargitay Crossing Over From SVU For Reboot Finale

Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay will be making a special appearance on the season finale of the Law & Order reboot. Law & Order, the Dick Wolf legal drama series that has now branched out into an entire universe of spin-offs, originally began airing on NBC in 1990. Although it is a long-running series by any possible measure, it was abruptly canceled after season 20 in 2010, leaving fans in the lurch. Although the original series was off the air, 1999’s Law & Order: SVU, which stars Mariska Hargitay as Olivia Benson, a member of a crack team devoted to investigating sex-related crimes, has now run for even longer. SVU season 23 is currently airing, and the show has amassed over 500 episodes.

Although over a decade had already passed, NBC finally announced in October 2021 that they would resurrect the original Law & Order for a brand new season. Season 21 was rushed into production and began airing on February 24, 2022, with many original cast members returning, including Sam Waterston as District Attorney Jack McCoy, Anthony Anderson as Detective Kevin Bernard, and Camryn Manheim as Lt. Kate Dixon, featuring various cameos including Dann Florek reprising the role of Donald Cragen. The show has also introduced a collection of new characters to the team, including Jeffrey Donovan as Frank Cosgrove, Bernard’s new partner.

On Today, current Law & Order showrunner Rick Eid revealed that Hargitay will be making a very special crossover appearance. The season 21 finale, which is titled “Black and Blue,” is set to air on May 19, 2022, the same night as the SVU season 23 finale. The episode will revolve around an officer friend of Cosgrove’s being shot, and during the course of the investigation, he and Bernard will have to seek help from Benson.

This crossover episode will mark the fourth time that Hargitay has ever appeared on Law & Order. When SVU was new, she appeared on several episodes of season 10 to help promote the show. However, the only other appearance that she made in Law & Order before it was canceled was five years later in season 16, in an episode where a con man made a call to Benson before being murdered.

There have been many crossovers in the Law & Order universe lately. This includes the return of longstanding Law & Order: SVU character Stabler, played by Christopher Meloni, who reunited with Benson as part of a crossover with his new series Law & Order: Organized Crime. However, in spite of all of the excitement of the past few years, Benson returning to the original series certainly feels most like the prodigal daughter returning home, and will surely thrill fans of both series.
