Jesse Williams Publicly Addresses Video Leak for First Time

Jesse Williams is addressing the leak of his Broadway nude scene for the first time.

The 40-year-old actor is currently starring in the revival of the play Take Me Out and he has several full frontal nude scenes throughout the show.

Earlier this week, an unauthorized video that was seemingly shot by an audience member in the front row was leaked online. The video showed Jesse completely naked during a shower scene.

While Jesse did talk about the nude scene in an interview on Watch What Happens Live, just hours after the leak, this is the first time he’s talking about the video leak.

“I’m not down about it. Our job is to go out there every night, no matter what,” Jesse told the Associated Press. “I’m not really worrying about it. I can’t sweat that. We do need to keep advocating for ourselves. And it’s wonderful to see a community push back and make clear what we do stand for, what we don’t. Consent is important, I thought. So, let’s keep that in mind universally.”

“Theater is a sacred space, and everybody doesn’t understand that. Everybody doesn’t necessarily respect or regard that in a way that maybe they should, or we’d like,” he added.

Jesse also explained why the nudity is important for the story. He said, “If somebody had just said it’s play with nudity, it would have been framed differently. But the nudity is honest. It makes sense. It’s not salacious. It serves the story. It puts the audience in an interesting position to relate to empathize with the characters.”

Jesse’s co-star Michael Oberholtzer, who also was seen in the leaked video, said the incident is “very disappointing.”

“People feel like that they can say and do things because they pay for admission or because they are a subscription member or whatever the case may be, that certain behavior is permissible. But it’s not. It’s a violation of people’s consent,” he said.

The theater has installed a new security system to make sure no one else records video.
