Stephen Curry For The Win! The NBA Champ Graduated College In A One-Man Ceremony

Stephen Curry has had an epic year! To add to his NBA championship earlier this year, he is now celebrating being a college graduate.

August 31, 2022, was a big day for NBA champion Stephen Curry. At a press conference 13 years ago, Curry, 34, made the promise to return to Davidson College to get his degree one day and that day has arrived. Not only did the NBA star receive his degree in a one-man graduation ceremony, he also became a Davidson Athletics Hall of Fame inductee and had his no. 30 college jersey retired.

Curry Completed His Degree In May, But The Big Celebration Happened In August

Curry attended Davidson College from 2006 to 2009 when he left for the NBA draft. He completed his degree, Bachelor of Arts in sociology, earlier this year at the North Carolina college, but it wasn’t until months later that he had the opportunity to celebrate his achievement.

Thousands of people attended the ceremony, including Curry’s friends and family. His father, Dell Curry, spoke during the ceremony. “This is awesome, man. This is good stuff here. Coach, this might be the best day ever to be a Wildcat!” he said. His mom, Sonya Curry also spoke, holding back tears saying, “This is a dream come true for me.” Curry also held back tears as he accepted his degree and then smiled as he threw his cap in the air.

Establishing The Curry Family Women’s Athletics Initiative With Wife Ayesha

Curry has always had a strong relationship with the college, even after leaving as a student. Last summer, Curry, along with their wife Ayesha, announced that they are establishing the Curry Family Women’s Athletics Initiative, that will be “aimed at helping close the inequity gap in women’s sports.”

In a video posted on social media, Curry said, “Davidson College is where it all started for me, and it no doubt prepared me for leadership and service. I’m forever grateful for the unwavering support from the entire Davidson community.” The father of three, daughters, Riley, 9, and Ryan, 6, and son Canon, 3, continued explaining why this initiative is so important to him. “The reason I am who I am today is also because of strong, powerful women that have poured into my life all these years. Now as the father of two girls, I want them to grow up without any boundaries on their futures.” The scholarship endowment will focus on elevating the 10 women’s programs and more than 200 female student-athletes at the college.

Graduating college wasn’t the only big milestone the Golden State Warriors player got to enjoy. The college called the event, “Curry for 3.” The first part was the graduation ceremony, second part was Curry’s induction into the Davidson College Hall of Fame, and the third was the No. 30 jersey retirement ceremony. The four-time NBA champion and two-time league MVP is the first player to have ever his jersey retired at the college. Davidson was waiting for Curry to officially graduate before retiring his number, and now no. 30 will never be worn by another Wildcats basketball player.

The NBA star played three seasons at Davidson and became the all-time leading scorer at the university with 2,635 points. He also holds the school record for 3-point field-goals, single-season points, and 30 and 40-point games.
