“I really hope that fans of the book find things to interest them and to engage them in the series” he told E! News. “I think we were very faithful.”

Tom went on to say that while some actors would find it stressful to star in a series with such a big fan base, he said “it doesn’t feel like pressure.” He added that he finds “existence of the book” to be a “gift.”

“Sarah Perry, the writer, has created so much interior life for every character,” he shared. “So it’s something that you can fold into the performance and interpret.”

The Essex Serpent follows newly widowed Cora (Claire Danes) who, having being released from an abusive marriage, relocates from Victorian London to the small village of Aldwinter in Essex, intrigued by a local superstition that a mythical creature known as the Essex Serpent has returned to the area.

Tom explained that while the show will stay true to what happens in the novel, his portrayal “has to be an interpretation.”

“When [Sarah’s writing] it’s her imagination and, in a way, she is inhabiting every character,” he noted. “And then when it hands over to us, we create a kind of collected and shared imagination.”

Claire agreed that the show was very similar to the book, telling the outlet: “I don’t think it is very different. So much of the book is about the environment that they’re in and nature as the sublime and I think [director Clio Barnard] captured that really brilliantly and beautifully.”
