Sometimes, it’s easy to forget that Lucasfilms has more than just Jedi and Sith. Willow, the 1988 fantasy epic that became a cult classic with Star Wars veteran Warwick Davis at the helm, also exists under the company’s banner–and will be getting a brand new TV show on Disney+ this year. At D23 Expo, the cast took to the stage to make some surprise announcements and debut a new trailer.

The biggest news of the Willow presentation was that Christian Slater will be joining the cast in an unknown role. His character will be connected to Madmartigan, who was originally played by Val Kilmer in the original movie–but we can’t be sure how or to what end. According to Slater, he wasn’t on set as long as everyone else, so he had to “do his best to warm everyone up when he got there.” He continued, saying that he “got to do some improv and some ad libs” while filming and called out how fun the experience was.

In the original movie, Madmartigan is the love interest of Sorsha, and friend of Willow. Kilmer will not be reprising his role, however, so we can assume Madmartigan will not be returning. His wife, however, will be–Sorsha is once again being played by Joanne Whalley. Warwick Davis, of course, will reprise the role of Willow. The show also has a number of new characters, like Kit, played by Ruby Cruz, the daughter of Sorsha, who will be the series’ main protagonist. Joining Cruz are Erin Kellyman, Ellie Bamber, Tony Revolori, Amer Chadha-Patel, and Dempsey Bryk.

D23 Expo will continue through the weekend. We’ve already had a number of announcements relating to Disney Studios and Pixar’s upcoming slates, and we can expect to learn more about the future of the MCU and Star Wars later today.
