Ted Lasso Season 3 Could Release Before The End Of 2022, Says Star

Cristo Fernández, who plays Dani Rojas on Ted Lasso, hopes season 3 will release its first episode on Apple TV+ before the end of 2022. Based on several promos Jason Sudeikis did for NBC Sports, Ted Lasso follows its titular small-time American football coach after he’s hired to lead the UK premier team, AFC Richmond, and its eccentric players. In addition to Fernández and Sudeikis, the series stars Hannah Waddingham, Jeremy Swift, Phil Dunster, Brendan Hunt, Brett Goldstein, Juno Temple, Nick Mohammed, Sarah Niles, and Toheeb Jimoh.

Not long after its premiere at the start of the pandemic in 2020, Ted Lasso quickly resonated with critics and audiences alike thanks to its masterful balance of comedy and drama, and its huge heart, which some have equated to streaming Chicken Soup for the Soul. The show also benefited from premiering to a content-hungry, binge-watching audience in lockdown. Sudeikis, Waddingham, and Goldstein have all won Emmy Awards for their performances, with Temple, Hunt, Mohammed, and Swift receiving nominations as well. Ted Lasso season 2 premiered last summer and built upon the cultural impact of season 1. Following season 2’s intriguing cliffhanger ending last Fall, fans have eagerly awaited details about season 3, which is currently filming but doesn’t yet have a premiere date.

In a recent interview with PopCulture.com, Fernández talked about his experience filming Ted Lasso this year compared to last year. While praising the show’s creative team, he expressed his hope that season 3 will once again premiere near the end of the year. Read the full quote below:

“We’re very excited to be back on set and, thankfully, these times are different than last year, as in COVID-wise. Last year we were shooting in the middle of lockdown, but at least now the city has reopened. I’m just really amazed of how talented the writers are in the show. The scripts are so good. We’ve been shooting for the last two months, things are going well, and I’m hopeful. Hopefully, the fans will love our Season 3, which, hopefully, will be at the end of the year as well, out. I’m really grateful with the show, very happy to be back with the cast and crew, so it’s been really nice.”

Fernández went on to tease “many more funny moments” and “lots of football” in Ted Lasso season 3. Season 2’s finale saw Nate’s insecurities come to a head as he blamed Ted for feeling neglected and left AFC Richmond to coach Rupert’s West Ham United, setting up a bitter rivalry with his former club now that they’ve been promoted. Keeley also decided to leave Richmond to start her own PR firm while (basically) breaking up with Roy. On top of that, there’s also the matter of Ted’s ongoing struggle with panic attacks and Rebecca and Coach Beard’s unrelated love lives.

Coach Beard actor/series co-creator Hunt teased a time jump for season 3 so it can coincide with the start of the Premier League’s season in August. It’s also expected to reveal more origin stories, specifically regarding the tumultuous backstory of Rebecca and Rupert. Last month it was announced that For All Mankind’s Jodi Balfour had been cast as Jack, a charming venture capitalist who will almost certainly play a key role in the proceedings. While season 3 is said to be Ted Lasso’s last season ala Return of the Jedi, the entire cast signed new deals that could facilitate subsequent seasons, stories, or spin-offs. Based on Fernández’s comments, Ted Lasso season 3 could premiere in late 2022 or get pushed to early 2023. Regardless, fans should expect more details sooner rather than later.
