Many others pointed out that a lot of the changes to the lore/potential plot holes that people are complaining about are caused by the fact that Amazon only owns the rights to The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King, the appendices, and The Hobbit, and not due to a lapse in attention to detail.

eeva | trop spoilers @reyoffjakku I think a lot of the Rings of Power discourses could be avoided if half of this fandom understood how copyright laws work and what exactly they have the rights to and what they don’t.Amazon does not have the rights to The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, The History of Middle-Earth, or any of Tolkien’s other works. Fans wondered how Amazon could tell a Second Age story without access to these books, but showrunner Patrick McKay told Vogue:
“There’s a version of everything we need for the Second Age in the books we have the rights to. As long as we’re painting within those lines and not egregiously contradicting something we don’t have the rights to, there’s a lot of leeway and room to dramatize and tell some of the best stories that [Tolkien] ever came up with.”

Guess which one people are mad about.Some have cited book descriptions and established lore as reasons they think there could be better castings for the roles, but there’s definitely been a separate yet noisy subset of people who know nothing of the lore and are just not happy about seeing POC main characters in a Lord of the Rings spin-off.

From there, Elon fans leaped on Gaiman and laid criticisms at his door for Rings of Power…you know, that show he didn’t write or make!
