1. Whether you love the show or hate it, it’s definitely a great time for fantasy fans.

With House of the Dragon, The Sandman, and now Rings of Power, fantasy fans are spoiled for choice.

2. If the viewing figures are anything to go by, Rings of Power is smashing it.

IGN @IGN With 25 million viewers, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has become Prime Video's most watched premiere of all time. https://t.co/7QKZQ4lLXl

The show has become Prime Video’s most watched premiere of all time.

3. Its impressive cinematography has ensured every shot looks like a work of art.

ٰ @thsaddest My god this is a gorgeous show #RingsOfPower

Many lamented not being able to see it on the big screen.

4. The fact that it’s the most expensive TV show ever produced could explain its visual beauty.

The Rice Thresher @TheRiceThresher REVIEW: "The first two episodes of “Rings of Power”, [the most expensive TV show ever produced], effectively build the foundation of the plot while presenting some of the best visuals I’ve ever seen from a television show."https://t.co/dfHuUn1n9l

5. A lot of people thought the writing and some of the acting weren’t up to the same standard as the visuals.

:omer? @demirelo "The Rings of Power" was fun to watch, even though it breaks some lore, has a slow start, and some acting is dull. Middle Earth created in this show is a visual and cinematic feast.

6. And whew, you don’t have to look far to find fans of Tolkien’s work who weren’t too happy with where Amazon took his lore.

Jeremy Prime @DDayCobra This perfectly explains Rings of Power

7. Tolkien’s works establish that female dwarves have full beards and are “usually mistaken for males.”

Nathan Barley Awareness Account @kathbarbadoro the only real tolkien fans are the ones who are mad the lady dwarf doesnt have a beard. you dont have to listen to any of the other ones

Twitter: @kathbarbadoro

So some fans weren’t happy with Disa having a somewhat discreet, fluffy chin instead of a full, flowing beard, nor the fact that she has a clearly feminine appearance.

Sophia Nomvete, who plays Disa, has talked about the reasoning behind this decision, explaining that they wanted to celebrate Disa’s passion and sexuality and visually combine that with her physical strength.

8. And speaking of missing hair, many lamented the loss of the glorious long locks we’re used to seeing on Tolkien’s elves.

TheMeggles?FanX Salt Lake City @MegglesArt My biggest complaint, as a huge Tolkien nerd, for The Rings of Power is the lack of hair everywhere. Where are the beautiful lady beards for the Dwarves? Why are the elves suddenly afraid of growing out their hair??

9. Some were shocked to see Galadriel go from the (mostly) serene sorceress of Peter Jackson’s work to a badass warrior, but many fans brought to light her already established immense power.

PiScEs27 AKA: Gandalf's Apprentice @Josh2Gud4U "Galadriel is a Mary Sue in the Rings of Power ?."Where was y'all at when she effortlessly carried a weakened Gandalf and fought Sauron with Elrond and Saruman standing behind her and then YEETED Sauron into another land?

10. Some liked that the show is carving its own path while still being clearly enmeshed and inspired by Tolkien’s world.

Corey Van Dyke ? @Corey_WolfPack One thing I loved about The Rings of Power was all the nods to the lore that came before it. I don’t personally know a ton but seeing how excited @DreamedOfMagic was getting got me excited. This is something I wish Star Wars would embrace a little more too.

11. Other fans thought people needed to just watch the show and enjoy what’s presented instead of picking apart the intricacies.

ShacklesVT @ShacklesKatsu I “CANNOT” stand overly critical people. It’s like they want perfection in every little detail. If it isn’t then it’s shit!I personally thought the first two episodes of the rings of power were fantastic. No it isn’t perfect but it’s pretty damn good. Coming from a big lotr fan

12. Many others pointed out that a lot of the changes to the lore/potential plot holes that people are complaining about are caused by the fact that Amazon only owns the rights to The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King, the appendices, and The Hobbit, and not due to a lapse in attention to detail.

eeva | trop spoilers @reyoffjakku I think a lot of the Rings of Power discourses could be avoided if half of this fandom understood how copyright laws work and what exactly they have the rights to and what they don’t.

Twitter: @reyoffjakku

Amazon does not have the rights to The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, The History of Middle-Earth, or any of Tolkien’s other works. Fans wondered how Amazon could tell a Second Age story without access to these books, but showrunner Patrick McKay told Vogue:

“There’s a version of everything we need for the Second Age in the books we have the rights to. As long as we’re painting within those lines and not egregiously contradicting something we don’t have the rights to, there’s a lot of leeway and room to dramatize and tell some of the best stories that [Tolkien] ever came up with.”

13. Aside from lore complaints, there has been a lot of controversies online around the perse character castings.

Laura Shortridge-Scott ???????? @DiscordianKitty In the books, Tolkien describes the Harfoots as being "browner of skin" than Hobbits. Here are two screenshots of Harfoots in the Rings of Power show. Guess which one people are mad about.

Prime Video / Amazon Studios Twitter: @DiscordianKitty

Some have cited book descriptions and established lore as reasons they think there could be better castings for the roles, but there’s definitely been a separate yet noisy subset of people who know nothing of the lore and are just not happy about seeing POC main characters in a Lord of the Rings spin-off.

14. Luckily, most fans are not entertaining that kind of behavior in their fandom.

Jamie Jirak @JamieCinematics I haven’t been able to open the hell site once this week without seeing sexist bullshit about She-Hulk or racist bullshit about Rings of Power. THESE ARE FICTIONAL SHOWS ABOUT BIG GREEN LADIES AND MOTHERFUCKING ELVES. Turn off your TV and get a therapist already.

17. There have also been complaints about the accent choices for the main races in the show; elves, men, hobbits/harfoots, and dwarves.

Luka Ivan Jukic @lijukic The Rings of Power ethnic stereotypes are something else:Elves speak posh English = pure, good, powerfulMen, provincial english = dirty, suspect, evil-sympathising Hobbits, Irish = dirty snail-eating travelling peasants Dwarves, Scottish = swarthy drunken English-haters

18. In a surreal turn of events, Elon Musk tweeted that Tolkien would be “turning in his grave” about the adaptation.

He also said every male character in the show so far is “a coward, a jerk or both”…

Elon Musk @elonmusk Almost every male character so far is a coward, a jerk or both. Only Galadriel is brave, smart and nice.

19. …and somehow, author Neil Gaiman, whose show, The Sandman, is currently smashing the streaming charts, got embroiled in Elon’s chaos…

Neil Gaiman @neilhimself I'm doing my best but, you know, making all that Lord of the Rings stuff is hard. Er. https://t.co/LouXB0h5AL

When randomly brought into a tweet thread about Rings of Power following Musk’s tweet, esteemed fantasy author Gaiman snarkily responded that “Elon Musk doesn’t come to me for advice on how to fail to buy Twitter, and I don’t go to him for film, TV or literature criticism.”

From there, Elon fans leaped on Gaiman and laid criticisms at his door for Rings of Power…you know, that show he didn’t write or make!

So what do you think of the show so far? Let me know in the comments!
