Stephen King Prepares to Watch Firestarter With His Dog In Cute Photo
Bestselling author Stephen King has posted a cute photo of himself and his dog getting set to watch Firestarter. After what has felt like a very long wait for fans of King’s work and horror films, the Zach Efron-led adaptation of King’s 1980 novel Firestarter was at last released on May 13. An adaptation of the novel had previously been released in 1984, with a very young Drew Barrymore in the role of pyrokinetic protagonist Charlie McGee.
This time around, however, the role of Charlie is played by newcomer Ryan Kiera Armstrong, with Efron in the role of her father, Andy. Together the pair go on the run from a dangerous government organization known as The Shop that wants to harness and study Charlie’s bizarre pyrokinetic abilities. The novel wasn’t one of Stephen King’s bestselling books, but it still did manage to amass enough of a following that a second attempt at a film adaptation was made. The original 1984 film failed to reach the heights that other popular King titles managed to achieve on the big screen, and this could have been a factor in greenlighting this latest effort. Unfortunately, despite having only just been released, the latest adaptation of Firestarter has not been finding much success with either critics or audiences.
Regardless of Firestarter’s initial release troubles, Stephen King seems undaunted. The 74-year-old author recently took to his official Twitter account to post a photo of himself and his dog, Molly aka The Thing of Evil, getting set to watch Firestarter. And while critics certainly haven’t taken to the film, King assures fans in the aforementioned post that Molly likes to watch things burn. Anyone who has followed the career of King over the years knows that when it comes to adapting his films, the road to success is rarely an easy one. There have certainly been hits throughout King’s lengthy career, however, with his novels The Shining, Carrie, It and Misery among some of the more successful examples. But while some of these titles are considered outright film classics, it seems that when King’s novels don’t work as films, they really don’t work. Still, for fans of his work it’s often easy to disregard poorly made adaptations, simply because King’s original novels are always so much fun to read.
It’s safe to say that with the poor performance of this latest adaptation of Firestarter that it will be a long time before the film is adapted again. It’s also reasonably safe to assume that a sequel won’t be arriving any time soon. Then again, the 2019 adaptation of King’s Pet Sematary didn’t exactly win critics and audiences over either, yet a Pet Sematary prequel is on the way. In the end, those who might be disappointed by this latest iteration of Firestarter can always look forward to a brand new novel from the horror maestro this September.
