Marilyn Monroe might not be here to witness the moment her iconic dress made history again, but her estate insists she would be proud of the person who wore the outfit.

As you might know, Kim Kardashian shut down the recently-held Met Gala, wearing Monroe’s iconic “Happy birthday Mr. President dress.”

However, the public’s reaction to Kardashian being the recipient of such a legendary dress hasn’t been positive. Nevertheless, the late actress’ estate ascertain she wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

Fans Bash Kim Kardashian For Wearing Marilyn Monroe’s Dress

For the prestigious fashion event, Kardashian showed up in Monroe’s custom Jean-Louis dress that she wore in 1962 during a special birthday performance for President John F. Kennedy.

The ensemble which made history the moment the “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” star put it on has since broken record to become the most expensive dress sold at an auction for a whopping $4.8 million.

Kardashian was able to get her hands on the outfit after reaching out to Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum which acquired it in 2016. The gorgeous sheer dress features over 6,000 crystals and had never been worn by anyone until now.

In fact, it was so precious that it wasn’t washed after Monroe wore it and was stored in a vault controlled at the optimum 68 degrees and 40-50% humidity to avoid any damage.

Given the historical value and fragile nature of the dress, fashion collectors and experts were furious at the news of the SKIMS founder wearing it, especially since it was one of Monroe’s last worn dresses before her tragic demise.

While speaking to the New York Post, Monroe experts bashed the reality star, noting she isn’t worthy to fit into the actress’ fashion legacy.

Author Michelle Morgan who wrote the book “The Girl: Marilyn Monroe, the Seven Year Itch, and the Birth of an Unlikely Feminist,” lamented, “I am extremely disappointed to see this 60-year-old, iconic dress being worn in public.”

She continued, “the gown is extremely fragile and has been previously kept in temperature-controlled conditions, but now here it is, not only being worn, but also in a red carpet environment, where anything could have happened to it.”

Several others took to social media to air their thoughts with one user writing, “Even years after Marilyn Monroe’s death, she is still being exploited and objectified by people who don’t respect and understand her complete legacy.”

Late Monroe’s Estate Stands By The ‘KUWTK’ Alum

Despite the backlash from the public, the legendary Golden Age actress’ estate believes that if Monroe were alive she would have been proud that Kardashian was the one who rocked her dress.

While speaking to TMZ, Nick Woodhouse, the President/CMO of Authentic Brands Group, which runs Monroe’s estate, shared that the pop culture icon would have loved that the mind-blowing dress is once again at the center of fashion and pop culture.

As for the choice of Kardashian, Woodhouse argued that no one else was worthy to don the dress again as he saw quite some similarities between the great Monroe and the “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” alum.

He explained that Kardashian and Monroe are both independent entrepreneurs, strong, and powerful women who enjoy being in front of the camera.

Although reports say that the reality star didn’t ask Monroe’s estate for blessings before wearing the dress, they ascertain that it was no problem as the dress legally belongs to Ripley’s.

And even if she had to seek their approval, Woodhouse notes Kardashian would have gotten it without any hassle.

Kardashian Had ‘Extreme Respect’ For The Dress

Although more people seem to be against Kardashian for risking such a historical piece to make a statement at the Met Gala, the socialite revealed that she took super extra precautions to make sure nothing happened to it.

Not only did the mother-of-four adopt an intense gym and diet routine, allegedly losing 16lbs, but she also chose to wear the dress for only five minutes.

As The Blast previously covered, Kardashian in an interview disclosed that she didn’t even use the body makeup that she normally uses.

“I’m extremely respectful to the dress and what it means to American history. I would never want to sit in it or eat in it or have any risk of any damage to it, and I won’t be wearing the kind of body makeup I usually do,” Kardashian explained.

She detailed only wearing the dress for some minutes, after changing at a pre-arranged changing room at the Met Gala and then having a standby conservationist from Ripley’s taking it off her once she was done walking the stairs.

Kardashian changed into a close replica for the rest of the night in respect of Monroe’s legacy.
