Serena Williams Praises Tom Brady For Starting ‘Amazing Trend,’ Retirement U-Turn?

Serena Williams seems to be teasing fans about returning to tennis barely one month after officially evolving from the sport.

The tennis legend announced in a moving Vogue essay that she was moving away from the game after two decades of professionally playing. Unfortunately, Williams’ last match at the Arthur Ashe Stadium ended in a loss, thus ending her run for a record 24th major win.

When Williams stopped over at Jimmy Fallon’s “The Tonight Show” on Tuesday night, the pair got into the former’s choice to leave tennis. After she spoke about the decision and her relief following the retirement announcement, the 23-time Grand Slam champ opened up about the possibility of changing her mind and “unretiring” from the sport.

Fallon asked Williams, “There’s no chance of you pulling a Tom Brady and saying, ‘Maybe I’m evolving to coming back.'” She jokingly replied, “You know what? Tom Brady started an amazing trend. That’s what I want to say.” Once she finished laughing at her joke, the mother-of-one elaborated on how her future in the sport is not clear-cut. In her words:

“I think retirement is something that’s super-earned, that people work really hard for. But I just feel like I’m at an age where I definitely have a lot more to give, there’s a lot more I want to do, and so, I’m not going to be relaxing, there is so much more for me and I feel it’s more like an evolution of Serena.”

She added that there were many things she had wanted to do for years and now seemed like the best time to “try to enjoy those things.” One of those things might be giving her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., a sibling.

The Blast previously shared that when Williams announced her retirement, she recalled an incident when Olympia divulged her wish of having a sibling so she could be a “big sister.” The five-year-old had no idea her mom could hear her as she was using an educational app that asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up.

Her wanting a younger sibling was the answer to the app’s question. The retired athlete further disclosed that her daughter even talked about her wishes through prayers by asking “Jehovah” for a baby sister. Williams’ essay highlighted her reluctance to quit the game because she never wanted to choose between her tennis career, her family, and other goals.

Earlier this month, The Blast noted that Williams was adjusting just fine to her “new normal.” To that end, the  December 2015 “Sportsperson of the Year” uploaded a picture of her seemingly sleeping on Instagram.

In the image, the 40-year-old lay on a bed and pillows covered in white-checkered sheets, with a gray headboard above them. There was also a bedside drawer with two bottles, a lamp, and a landline. While Williams’ head rested on what appeared to be a little bear, the rest of her body was under a “Moana” duvet. The mother-of-one shared in the caption, “How was your weekend? This was mine.”

The post quickly grabbed attention as Williams’ fans have liked it over half a million times, with 6k+ people commenting on it. Amongst the many comments was one from “Nigerian Idol” finalist and singer Jemiriye, who exclaimed, “Yes!!! A rest well deserved Queen [queen emoji] with a very beautiful blanket [love emojis].”

Another person added, “If there is ANYONE that deserves to rest, it’s YOU!!!! Thank you for everything! [goat, tennis ball, and crown emojis].” A third fan went the philosophical route and wrote, “You see that line where the sky meets the sea? Well, its calling you to greater still! Thank you for your brand of feisty, ferocious, and fierce fight!”

Actor Miguel A. Núñez Jr. also joined in the festivities penning a lengthy reply. After encouraging her to “truly enjoy” the benefits of her hard work, the “Tour of Duty” star wrote, “Your journey is just beginning, don’t look BACK, look AHEAD to All the God has granted you the ability to enjoy & share with….”

He concluded by advising Williams to open tennis schools because he knew that she would win at whatever she set out to do.
