Doctor Strange 2's Disney Easter Egg Was Way Deeper Than You Realize

Warning: this post contains MAJOR spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is filled to the brim with Easter eggs and references, and one Disney-based allusion perfectly reflects the Scarlet Witch’s fall to evil. The Doctor Strange sequel follows its titular character’s efforts to save young superhero America Chavez from an otherwordly threat chasing her across the multiverse. It is quickly revealed that the threat is actually the Avenger Wanda Maximoff, now going by the moniker of the Scarlet Witch. She uses the Darkhold, an evil magic spellbook, to track America and steal her power, which ables her to leap from one universe to another. Wanda wants the gift specifically to travel to a world in which her twin sons, Billy and Tommy, exist.

Wanda’s fall from grace has been teased for a while in the MCU. Her eyes flickered red in Avengers: Endgame as she fought Thanos and declared, “You took everything from me.” She further took a dark turn during the first-ever Marvel Disney+ show, WandaVision, in which she trapped an entire town inside her own deranged fantasy. Within this illusion, Vision was alive again, and she created Billy and Tommy with magic. However, by the end of WandaVision, the twins disappeared along with all of her other concoctions. Now the villain of her story, Wanda is willing to kill a teenager so that she can have the power to enter another world, swap with the Wanda of that universe, and take over her happy life.

Toward the end of the Doctor Strange sequel, America finally gains control over her powers and opens a portal to a universe where Billy and Tommy are alive and living with that world’s Wanda. The evil Wanda/Scarlet Witch enters the universe and battles her alternate self while the boys cower in fear and plead for her to stop. She ultimately stops in a moment of realization, dropping to her knees in front of the good Wanda, who seems forgiving and understanding. In the background, a television is playing Disney’s 1938 animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and this Doctor Strange 2 Easter egg is a subtle reference to Wanda’s fall to evil. The Scarlet Witch is equated with Snow White‘s Evil Queen, powerful and driven by her envy.

Much like the Evil Queen, the Scarlet Witch is powerful in the art of magic, seen to easily best the sorcerers at Kamar-Taj before hunting America across the multiverse and wiping out the Illuminati. It’s easy to draw comparisons between the good Wanda and Snow White. Much like Disney’s fairy tale princess, who was put to sleep by the Evil Queen, the other universe Wanda also compares to Snow White in her forgiveness of the evil Wanda, as Snow White is famous for her good nature and kind heart. The Scarlet Witch’s death in Doctor Strange 2 also reflects that of the Evil Queen’s own demise, as they both get crushed by their own hand while atop a mountain. Wanda collapses the temple of Chthon on herself, whereas the Evil Queen in Snow White tries to crush the dwarfs but the ground breaks and the boulder falls on top of her.

While the Evil Queen was evil through and through, Wanda/Scarlet Witch is good in her heart and is only evil due to her desperation to be happy. However, while the Scarlet Witch is a villain for the most part, especially at the moment when the film shows the Snow White Easter egg, she quickly redeems herself by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ end. In addition to bringing the temple of Chthon down upon herself, she destroys the Darkhold in every dimension. This not only stops other Wandas from becoming corrupt but also saves the good Wanda from being possessed again in the future by other distraught Wandas across the multiverse.
