According to the New York Post, the 52-year-old was charged last Tuesday with murder, aggravated assault, use of a handgun during the commission of a crime, and simple battery.

The murder and aggravated charge come after an individual named Artez Benton died in the shootout while another person involved in the ordeal was hospitalized.

Upon earlier investigation, police authorities revealed that the shooting incident resulted from an altercation between Zulu and some individuals who accosted him in the parking lot. The music talent head was also shot in the process and had to be rushed to the hospital at the time.

Per the publication, Zulu later returned to his home that same day after posting a $200,000 bond.

Chaka Zulu Claims Self Defense

Following the news of his arrest making headlines, Zulu’s attorney, Banks, issued a statement to the pressing, saying he was “disappointed” that Atlanta police charged his client with murder. He added that Zulu “was forced to defend himself” on that day against a gang that included at least four individuals.

“Mr. Zulu was shot in the back during the shooting and nearly lost his life, and is still recovering from the nearly fatal injuries he sustained that evening. Mr. Zulu was at his place of business that night and had every right to defend himself,” the announcement read per Zulu’s official Instagram account.

“In an attempt to save his life, Mr. Zulu lawfully discharged his weapon in self-defense; a weapon that he is licensed to carry,” Banks said before asserting that his client “remains confident that his name will be cleared of all charges through the judicial process.”

The Family Of The Deceased Wants Justice

On the other hand, Artez’s family members are looking for justice, seemingly opining that the 23-year-old’s murder was premeditated.

“We just want justice for Artez,” Arteria, his older sister, said after the shooting in a statement to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “That’s the main thing we want. So if you see something, say something, please.”

Artez’s father, Artis Benton, also lamented the loss of his son, who graduated with honors from Druid Hills High School and then enrolled at Young Harris College on a partial academic scholarship. Before his death, the demised young adult was a Mayberry Electric apprentice and had just started a clothing brand called Cash Life Global with his buddies.

“He did everything right,” his father, Artis Benton, told the publication. “I never thought that this would be the end for him.”

Court Date Still Unknown

In the meantime, the authorities have yet to reveal the court date for Zulu’s case. They have also not shared any further details about the motive of the murder.

Earlier in the year, The Atlanta Hawks recognized Zulu in January for his support of and mentoring of new artists through his label.
