Activists are calling domestic violence a ā€œnational health crisis,ā€ and it affects nearly a quarter of American women and one in seven men.

Joseph and Tara Petito and Nichole and Jim Schmidt attended ā€œHope Is On The Lineā€ where nearly 200 survivors, activists and lawmakers met to acknowledge and celebrate the hotlineā€™s work.

ā€œWe cried most of the evening, but we are so proud to be part of this,ā€ Petitoā€™s mother, tweeted after the event. ā€œWe want to help, we want to make change, we want to fight!ā€

The Gabby Petito foundation held its first fundraiser last year and donated $100,000.00 to the hotline.

ā€œWe answered our first call in 1996,ā€ the hotline said in a statement after Thursdayā€™s event. ā€œSince then, weā€™ve responded to the calls, chats, and texts of more than 6 million people impacted by relationship abuse.ā€

President Biden also marked the hotlineā€™s major anniversary.

ā€œ28 years ago, the Violence Against Women Act became law,ā€ he tweeted. ā€œI wrote VAWA to fight the scourge of domestic violence. It also created the National Domestic Violence Hotline, a lifeline for survivors. Because of the Act, lives have been saved, children protected, and futures restored.ā€
