‘House Of The Dragon’ Fabien Frankel Reveals Sex Scene With Milly Alcock Took Over 7 Months

Actor Fabien Frankel just revealed how much effort he put in for his sex scene with Milly Alcock in “House of the Dragon.” In the “Game of Thrones” prequel, the actor played Ser Criston Cole, the personal knight of Alcock’s character, Princess Rhaenyra.

The series premiered in August and has since drawn a large audience. One of the most recent episodes required Frankel to do a sex scene with Alcock. The scene was particularly significant because, due to his role as a part of the Kingsguard, Cole had sworn a chastity oath.

In a recent interview, Frankel shed light on the sex scene and how he prepared for it. The actor reportedly enlisted the aid of the series director as well as the intimacy coordinator while he worked out the scene’s intricacies for months before the shoot.

Frankel recently joined Entertainment Weekly during the “West of Westeros” podcast and revealed that he spent over six months preparing for his sex scene with Alcock in episode four of “House of the Dragon.” The episode saw the actress who played Princess Rhaenyra persuade Frankel’s character, Cole, her personal knight, to take her virginity.

The actor explained that he worked hand in hand with Alcock, Clare Kilner, the series director, and Miriam Lucia, “House of the Dragon” intimacy coordinator, months before the shoot. Frankel further explained that he took so much care because he didn’t want the scene to look “gratuitous” to the viewers.

“It was something we talked about over seven months,” he said. “It was one of the first things I was very keen to talk about. The big thing for me was about it not feeling like another gratuitous, sweat-glistening-off-their-back sex scene, ’cause it’s just not like that. Anyone who’s ever had sex will tell you sex ain’t that beautiful. It isn’t some picturesque, amazing thing. It’s awkward, especially when you are young.”

He Wanted The Scene To Be Different

Further on, Frankel revealed to EW that he wanted the sex scene to be different from the typical “Game of Thrones” scenes. He went on to talk about a Hulu series released around the same time the sex scene was shot. According to Frankel, the series portrayed the “realities of sex,” which he strived to do with the scene.

He continued, “I just remember back and forth texts, back and forth phone calls, back and forth meetings between Clare, myself, Milly, and our intimacy coordinator. But particularly me, Clare, and Milly going, ‘How do we make this human?'”

Frankel further revealed that he decided to lean into Cole’s struggle to keep himself from betraying his vows as well as his attempts to take off his armor.

Frankel added that due to how heavy and complex armor was, with the help of a squire, knights usually took at least five minutes when taking off their armor, so the scene could hardly be different.

“It was about the struggle in every way: the struggle to get the armor off, the struggle of him to betray his vows… That’s how I wanted to pitch it,” the actor said to EW.

Frankel continued, “Knights would have squires, and squires would take off their armor. For even a world-quality squire, you’ve got 10 minutes to get the armor off. Let’s say five, maybe at best. There’s no way Rhaenyra and Cole are gonna take that armor off in 10 seconds. So I was like, ‘Well, you have to have that in.”

Criston Cole And Princess Rhaenyra Were Intimate

Frankel’s character Cole was Rhaenyra’s personal guard and a member of the Kingsguard. The character was hand-picked by the princess herself, so it was no surprise that the duo got closer as the series progressed. They eventually became friends during the Royal hunt after finding the white stag King Viserys I, Rhaenyra’s father, was unable to capture.

The fourth episode of the series saw the two friends become lovers after a night out in the Kingslanding underbelly. The princess was initially taken out by her uncle, Daemon Targaryen, to witness how the common folk lived.

When Rhaenyra returned to the Red Keep, she persuaded Cole to sleep with her and take her virginity. The act not only broke his vow as a night, but it also led to events that significantly impacted the series’ future.
