Spinal Tap 1 & 2 Movie Rights Are Available For Sale
The rights for This Is Spinal Tap and the forthcoming sequel, Spinal Tap II, are going up for sale at the Cannes Film Festival. This Is Spinal Tap is a 1984 mockumentary about the fictional band Spinal Tap, which is made up of three members: David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer). Rob Reiner directed the film, which he cowrote with the actors playing the band, and he also played Marty DiBergi, the filmmaker chronicling their tour.
In a shocking recent announcement, a sequel to This Is Spinal Tap, called Spinal Tap II, was said to be in development with Reiner and the original cast returning. Now, as reported by Deadline, the rights for This Is Spinal Tap and Spinal Tap II will be up for sale at the Cannes Film Festival, which takes place from May 17 through the 28. With the rights of both movies up for sale, the filmmakers are hoping that the films can be made available from the same platform or distributor, giving audiences easy access.
Spinal Tap II is said to follow the band as they are forced to get back together because of a contractual obligation, which is sure to provide similar comedic antics as seen in the original film. This Is Spinal Tap is also set to play at Cannes on Wednesday at a beach screening, likely to help drum up interest in the sale. This Is Spinal Tap was even selected for preservation by the National Film Registry in 2002 when the Library of Congress deemed it a “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” film. Further details on the sale of This Is Spinal Tap and its sequel Spinal Tap II will be forthcoming as Cannes gets underway.
