A long-lost Mariah Carey album recorded in the mid-1990s in secret may finally see the light of day.

During a recent interview with Rolling Stone’s Brian Hiatt, Carey revealed that she recently discovered a long-lost version of an alternative rock album, “Someone’s Ugly Daughter,” with her own lead vocals still intact, and it looks like she has plans to release it at some point down the line.

In her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” the singer and songwriter revealed in the book that she originally wrote, produced, and recorded the album with her friend Clarissa Dane. In 1995, when the album was released, it was released with the group name Chick.

The originally released version of “Someone’s Ugly Daughter” featured mostly Dane singing the lead vocals. According to Carey, this long-buried version also features her lead vocals still intact.

As noted by Pitchfork, while speaking to Hiatt, Carey was initially asked about the long-lost version of the album with her vocals, for which she replied, “We actually have it.” Carey also noted that she is planning to put this version out, but she said she is also working on a version of the album along with “another artist” that could “possibly” be “built around” “Someone’s Ugly Daughter.”

Carey’s involvement with the album was kept secret by Columbia Records in 1995 when it was initially released. The record label seemingly buried the original version that had Carey’s vocals on the record, which were later replaced by the ones recorded by Dane. However, her backing vocals were kept on the original release. Carey produced and wrote all the tracks on the album, save for the cover of Cheap Trick’s “Surrender.”

The singer revealed in her interview with Hiatt that she also did the album’s artwork, featuring a dead roach next to some lipstick.

Carey wrote on her Twitter in September 2020 that she worked on the album while she was also making her fifth studio album, “Daydream.” She said the experience was “just for laughs,” however noting that the experience helped get her “through some dark days.”

Fun fact: I did an alternative album while I was making Daydream 👀 Just for laughs, but it got me through some dark days. Here's a little of what I wrote about it in #TheMeaningOfMariahCarey 🤟 S/O to my friend Clarissa who performs the lead w/ me as a hidden layer #Chick #TMOMC pic.twitter.com/Re23t5whcd

Later on, Carey revealed that she was on the hunt to find the original recorded version of the secret album that had her lead vocals on it. Carey said on finding the missing version that she would “not stop until we find it!” It looks like that search has finally been completed, and the long-buried version has finally been discovered.

Fun fact 2: now that you've listened to Clarissa's kick-ass lead vocals, I can tell you that I'm on a quest to unearth the version of this album with my lead vocals and will not stop until we find it! So happy that we get to experience this together lol! 🐏❤️🎸 https://t.co/EMukSDgWPu
