The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced Tuesday (Sept. 20) that “The Golden Globe Awards” will return to the broadcast airwaves and NBC in 2023. The awards show will return for its landmark 80th anniversary in January 2023 on the network.

NBC’s broadcast deal with the awards ceremony is part of a one-year agreement, and it will also allow the HFPA and Dick Clark Productions (DCP) to explore new domestic and global broadcast opportunities for the awards ceremony across multiple platforms in the near future.

‘The Golden Globe Awards’ Are Returning To NBC Next Year

NBCUniversal Television and Streaming Entertainment Networks Chairman Frances Berwick spoke on the announcement via a press release, which credited the HFPA for making changes and reforms in light of some past controversy. Berwick stated, “We recognize the HFPA’s commitment to ongoing change and look forward to welcoming back the Golden Globes to NBC for its landmark 80th Anniversary in January 2023.”

The HFPA opted to hold the Golden Globes back this year in the fallout from a story by The Los Angeles Times from February 2021, which reported on the HFPA “engaging in unethical conduct and suspect financial practices,” as noted by The Hollywood Reporter. The story also pointed out a lack of diversity among the HFPA members.

After the release of the story by the LA Times, NBC opted out of broadcasting the Golden Globes earlier this year, with the network publicly stating, “We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right.” The aftermath of the exposé saw celebrities and publicists also publicly distancing themselves from the HFPA and Golden Globes.

NBC had previously aired “The Golden Globe Awards” annually since the year 1996. As THR reports, the network will end its current pact with the HFPA following next year’s ceremony. HFPA and DCP had signed a deal in 2018 where NBC would pay the organizations about $60 million a year to broadcast the Golden Globes through 2026. So, it appears that deal is now ending a bit early under the revised one-year agreement.

Per the HFPA’s announcement, the “80th Annual Golden Globe Awards” will have its deadline for Motion Picture and Television Submissions on Monday, November 7. Nominations will be announced the following month on Monday, December 12, with the awards show airing live on NBC on Tuesday, January 10, 2023.

HFPA Makes Changes To Voting Pool

The HFPA’s announcement also announced that 103 new voters have been added to the ballot casters ranks, noting that this is the first time international-based voters have been added to the voting pool. According to the press release, the new voting pool is represented by 62 countries from around the world.

Also, THR reports that some publicists who previously were gung-ho against the HFPA have softened their positions on the awards ceremony now. The main reason is that the NBC broadcast tends to be one of the highest-rated broadcasts of the awards season before the Academy Awards, so it gives a nice boost to their clients and Oscar hopes.

The “80th Annual Golden Globe Awards” will air on NBC and the Peacock streaming service on Tuesday, January 10, 2023. The broadcast will air live from coast-to-coast at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT.
