11 “Meet Cute” Behind-The-Scenes Facts That Are Going To Make You Love The Movie Even More

If you’re an unabashed rom-com fan (hi!), there’s a chance you’ve been keeping an eye on Peacock’s Meet Cute for a while now. Kaley Cuoco! Pete Davidson! Feelings! Ahh!

Peacock

“Getting to set every day was great. Leaving set was even funnier, because Pete and Kaley would be texting me to send them outtakes,” he told BuzzFeed, before joking, “I didn’t get to do my work, because Pete and Kaley wanted to see all the outtakes, but it’s fine.”

3. It was Kaley’s ability to oscillate between comedy and drama that stood out to director Alex as a highlight of working with the actor.

Peacock

He explained, “I wish people understood just how brilliant she was comedically, then she hits that hard right turn and goes dramatic, and comes back to the comedy. You’re like, ‘What did I just watch?’ That’s working with Kaley Cuoco.”

4. Throughout the movie, small parts of Sheila’s wardrobe change from timeline to timeline — mirroring her emotional state.

Peacock

Costume designer, Michelle J Li, told BuzzFeed, “From timeline to timeline, Sheila’s earrings, her necklaces, maybe her hairstyle will change.”

5. The yellow dress Sheila wears throughout the movie was made 72 hours before shooting started. Over a weekend, the dress was designed, fit, and made — in fact, eight multiples of the dress ended up being used.

Peacock

“We shopped so many different yellow sundresses,” Michelle explained, recalling the decision to end up making the dress. “The director and I both agreed that a sundress was a silhouette that really embodied the emotions of Sheila — whether it was very free and breezy, but at the same time very confident.”

6. And the decision for the dress to be yellow was made to contrast against the red and blue sets.

Peacock

“We knew that it was going to be a sundress, we knew that it was going to be yellow — because, in my conversations with Laura, the production designer, her sets were always going to be red and blue. To complete that primary color palette, that dress was always going to be yellow,” Michelle recalled.

7. The montage where Sheila and Gary go on their “first date” and play with sparklers is where the direction of the movie’s score began to click into place.

Peacock

“Tapping into the rom-com element, but with a little bit of melancholy behind it, was definitely the biggest challenge. There were a lot of times where I would send a piece of music to the director and he would be like, ‘It’s really nice, but it’s too nice! We [need it to be] rough around the edges, broken down, weathered — like when tape loops over and over and over again, it breaks down,” composer Stephen Lukach told BuzzFeed.

8. In the scene where Gary and Sheila have dinner at a very fancy restaurant, a crew member was last-minute enlisted to act as an additional waiter.

Peacock

The addition posed a problem for the costume team. “We had to go to the [costume] truck, we had to find a costume that we didn’t plan for,” Michelle explained. “We played with so many pieces in the truck. From that request that Alex made to when she was on set, it was probably 15 minutes.”

9. As a prank, sometimes “literal toys” would be served instead of food in the restaurant scenes.

Peacock

“No one knows it’s coming. It’s a serious take!” Rock Kohli told BuzzFeed “Hopefully you can see it.”

10. And Deborah S. Craig, who plays June in the movie, put on the voice of Pete’s SNL Chad character and said “Okay!” one take.

Peacock

Deborah joked, “We were supposed to avoid it, but I did really think of that moment where Pete does Chad on SNL — just for myself, I’m sure Alex does not want that on a blooper reel.”

Warning: Mild spoilers for the ending of Meet Cute ahead.

11. Kaley thinks that the movie is ultimately about love meaning accepting every part of someone.

Peacock

“I love the role because Sheila’s a troubled human being. As funny as this movie is, this is a troubled soul. She finds this man who she falls madly in love with — but then, at the end of the day, she tries to change him. The lesson she learned is that when you love someone, you take every part of them. You take the good, the bad, the ugly. That’s the lesson, I think in this movie — we all come with our baggage, and you choose to love it,” Kaley explained.
