‘Andor’ Showrunner Tony Gilroy Is Already Talking Season 2!

“The Bourne Legacy” creator Tony Gilroy is the mastermind behind the new Star Wars live-action series “Andor,” which hit Disney+ earlier this week.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gilroy revealed that one of the reasons the series has been so well-received by fans is due to the fact that he actually asked his staff to check their love of the franchise at the door.

Tony Gilroy Dishes On The ‘Potent Power’ of Star Wars

Tony Gilroy revealed that crew members in every department changed both their “attitude” and their “behavior” when they start working on a project set in a galaxy far, far away.

“And you go, ‘Wait, no. Do your thing. You’re here because we want you to be real.’ So it’s a testament to the potent power of Star Wars,” he said. “It really gets into people’s heads, but to change the lane and do it this way, it takes a little effort.”

“Andor” will consist of two seasons, which are split into twelve episodes each. Although Gilroy has a heavy hand in the first season, the talented director revealed he will not be directing at all in the second season to focus on his duties as showrunner.

Tony Gilroy Will NOT Be Directing Season 2 of ‘Andor’

Gilroy confessed that he “can’t” direct the second season because the “job is just too huge.” However, he did reveal that director Ariel Kleiman is already out in Pinewood, as they start shooting season two in November. Although Gilroy will not be directing any of the twelve last episodes in Andor’s story, he will still serve as showrunner, given that the show was basically his creation.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Gilroy revealed that there were a few “different versions” of the show that floated around before the creative team eventually settled on what fans see on the screen. He revealed that Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy sent him one of the pilots they were working on, considering his work on 2016’s “Rogue One,” where the character of Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) originated.

“I had time. I was in some sort of manic thing, and so I just got on it for a couple of days. So I wrote this big manifesto for her,” he explained. “This is what your show should be like. This is what you should never do. This is why this doesn’t work.’ So it was a crazy thing, and it was wildly ambitious.”

Although Lucasfilm didn’t think they could pull off his idea on a small screen, they later revisited the idea and decided to pursue it, given the success of other Star Wars shows, like “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett.”

Although any new Star Wars series is going to introduce new characters, Gilroy revealed that “Andor” introduces many new characters. Although he teased that the show has a “high” body count, it doesn’t necessarily mean that all new fan-favorite characters are going to bite the dust, given the possibility of them showing up in other Star Wars spin-offs.

“We literally have around 200 speaking parts in the first 12 episodes,” Gilroy said. “When I figured out season two, I had to make about 30 phone calls to the actors that I knew were going to go forward. I had to call them up and say, ‘Hey, this is what I’m thinking. This is when you live. This is when you die. This is how many episodes you’re in.'”

“I mean, the body count is high all the way through, but people live. It’s a revolution. It’s a very intense period of time. People are doing very dangerous things,” he continued. “Some people live and some people don’t. How do we know who lives or dies at the end from the previous Star Wars? You wouldn’t know. I mean, there are people buried in Yavin. Who knows who’s there.”

The first three episodes of “Andor” are currently available to stream on Disney+, with new episodes being released every Wednesday. Fans interested in what star Diego Luna had to say about his new spin-off series can check out his recent interview with Jimmy Kimmel by clicking here.
