Johansson welcomed her son Cosmo with her husband Colin Jost in late 2021, and the “Avengers” actress is dishing on how they came up with such a unique name. She is also a doting mother to daughter Rose, from her marriage to Roman Dauriac.

The “Black Widow” star made an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” on Monday, where she shared a hilarious backstory to the unique name for her son. During the interview, the award-winning actress discussed with host Kelly Clarkson how fast her son has grown.

She shared that the little one is around 14 or 15 months but still has the baby smell she loves. Johansson was then asked how she came up with the name Cosmo. The 37-year-old mother hilariously replied, “We just threw a bunch of letters together.”

She then continued by expressing how she and her friends felt about the outcome, “I just thought it was so charming, and our friends all liked it.” However, the unique name just didn’t sit well on one person. Before Cosmo’s birth, Jost’s mother kept persuading the couple to change their preferred name.

Cosmo’s grandma called several times in hopes that his name would be changed. She kept on suggesting several versions of the name, but the couple stood their ground on the name Cosmo.

“Colin’s mom had a bit of a harder time with it,” the five-time Golden Globe nominee said. “She kept suggesting other versions of it, and I’m like, ‘No, he’s already here, he’s out.’ ”

The actress, however, didn’t state what her mother-in-law hated about the name during the interview. It was a uniting moment on the show for Clarkson, and the “Under the skin” actress as both their daughters were named after flowers. They then both realized then the connection between both of Johansson’s kids’ names.

“I love that, though, because your daughter is Rose,” Clarkson points out. “I love that they’re both flowers! My kids hate plants and how much I love them… but I love flowers and plants, and I thought that was kind of cool!”

The “Avengers: Endgame” actress affirmed the connection between her daughter’s name and her son’s name. In her words, “They are both flowers. Not a lot of people make that connection. Cosmo is a really sweet little flower that comes in different shades of orange and yellow.” She then concluded by saying Rose liked the name too.

Jost’s Mom Wasn’t Onboard With The Name Initially

This isn’t the first time Johansson and Jost’s name has been a topic of discussion. Last October, the “Saturday Night Live” writer, during an appearance on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” dished on his mother’s reaction to his son’s name.

“My mom, I would say, was slightly thrown by it and didn’t quite understand it. I don’t know if she thought it was kind of like a hippie thing,” he explained.

The comedian corroborated Johansson’s story saying his mom called several times to confirm if that was really her grandson’s name and even went as far as suggesting that Jost and Johansson tweak the name to become “Cosimo.

As for Cosmo’s grandma, the name would definitely grow on her, but not without some external influence. Jost’s mom, who stays in Staten Island, finally found closure with the name when she began interacting with her Italian neighbors and found some of them bearing the moniker.

The couple, who first met when the “Lucy” star hosted “SNL” in 2006, welcomed their first child together in August 2021. The lovebirds, who are notoriously private, confirmed the news via a post on Jost’s social media that read, “Ok ok, we had a baby. His name is Cosmo. We love him very much. Privacy would be greatly appreciated.”

Johansson Revealed Her Son’s Latest Obsession With His Feet

While the Tony Award winner rarely talks about her personal life, back in December, she gushed about Cosmo’s fascination with his feet. Per The Blast, in an interview, she disclosed that baby Cosmo had discovered new things about his body, but what fascinated him most was his cute little feet.

Relating how it felt to the outlet, the Marvel star said, “It’s just unbelievable. I mean, can you imagine you never realized you had feet, and then you looked down, and there they are? You’re like, ‘whoa.'”

The New York native also revealed that her daughter Rose just realized that her mother has always been a famous actress.
