West held his Yeezy Season 9 fashion show on October 3rd and allowed a live stream of the event. Several controversial pieces in the new line immediately generated backlash on social media. One of the critics was Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, a contributing editor at Vogue, and she made her displeasure with the line very clear on Instagram.

Karefa-Johnson posted a video of a Black model from the Yeezy show walking the runway in a shirt with a “White Lives Matter” print. West had shown up to the event wearing a shirt with the WLM print. Karefa-Johnson called the design “indefensible behaviour” and wrote in a message she shared to her story where she tried to understand the situation; “I guess I get what he tried to do — he thought it was duchampian. It wasn’t.”

Her initial attempt at rationalizing West’s controversial runway led her to state firmly where she stood on the matter. She wrote, “It’s become quite clear that some people think my previous post containing my working evolving thoughts on Kanye’s show, was some sort of distorted justification for the incredibly irresponsible and dangerous act of sending “W*** Lives Matter” T-shirts down a runway.”

Karefa-Johnson stated that she was not in anyway justifying the rappers runway, adding that, “the tshirts this man conceived, produced, and shared with the world are pure violence. There is no excuse, there is no art here.”

She concluded, “As we all work through the trauma of this moment, especially those of us who suffered in that room, let’s have some grace for one another.”
