“I Wanted To Forget The Entire Series As Quickly As Possible”: 21 Final Seasons Of TV That Disappointed Fans

A lil’ while ago, Redditor u/crazycinamon asked the television buffs of r/AskReddit, “Which TV show has the worst last season?” Here are 21 of their submissions to the Disappointing TV Olympics.

Responses may have been edited for length and/or clarity.

1. “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The ending was so out of character for Sabrina that it ruined the show.”

BBC America

3. “The Brady Bunch is up there. I used to watch it all the time with my family and had seen all but the last season. One year, my uncle bought my sister the last season on DVD for her birthday, and we were all super excited to watch. They decided the main family wasn’t good enough and brought in a cousin who starts living with them because his parents are traveling the world. And the little guy was just not funny and not a good actor. Poor cousin Oliver was doomed to fail from the start.

“Also, they were canceled, so the finale wasn’t intended to be the actual finale. There was some stupid plot line involving hair dye, and the father hated the plot so much he refused to be part of the finale. This was the first episode either of the parents had not appeared in. And to make matters worse, it was the oldest son’s high school graduation. Their only mention of Mike Brady was at the end when they’re happily celebrating Greg’s graduation, and Carol says, ‘Too bad your dad is on a business trip.'”

4. “New Girl. The last season was so fake and forced. It was just awkward. Did they get a new director that changed the way everyone acted?”

5. “Orange Is the New Black. It just wasn’t the same in that other prison building.”

6. “Supernatural. If all 15 seasons hadn’t happened, Dean would have died on a hunt gone wrong and Sam would have gotten a family and a white picket fence. With all 15 seasons of Supernatural happening, Dean died on a hunt gone wrong and Sam gets a family and a white picket fence. Also, I’m still not over how they RUINED 11 YEARS OF BUILDUP WITH Season 15, Episode 18*.”

(*Season 15, Episode 18 is the one where Castiel tells Dean he loves him and then dies.)

7. “Criminal Minds. I loved the whole series, but slowly, after most of the original cast was gone, it wasn’t the same.”

CBS

8. “Superstore, because it wasn’t supposed to end, and they had already filmed most of it when it was canceled, so everything was rushed, and they didn’t get to play out the story lines they wanted to.”

9. “House M.D. I ended up liking the last episode, but most of the last season was lacking.”

10. “That ’70s Show.

“We don’t talk about the last season. It never happened.”

11. “Sherlock (the BBC version). I see no one talking about how shit it was in comparison to Season 2.”

“After it was over, I wanted to forget the entire series as quickly as possible. Imagine our disappointment. It’s like being excited that they’re making a movie of your favorite animated series, only to come out with The Last Airbender. You have to say, ‘We will never speak of this again.'”

12. “As much as it pains me to admit this…Gilmore Girls. By the last season, it was new writers, and they just destroyed the last season. And then, Amy Sherman-Palladino tried to fix it with A Year in the Life…”

13. “While plenty of other shows have arguably worse last seasons, I would just like to mention that Battlestar Galactica‘s finale was incredibly disappointing. The heavy-handed religious hand waving and lack of payoff for the various mysteries that kept me engaged just soured that show for me so badly that I haven’t rewatched it since it originally aired.”

14. “Lucifer. The final episode sealed the show’s fate. I like to believe it was all a dream.”

Netflix / Courtesy Everett Collection

15. “Teen Titans. It just kind of ended with absolutely no character arcs wrapped up.”

16. “The Glades. It ends with the hero critically shot by a mystery bad guy/girl while his fiancée is calling him on the phone from the wedding venue. She called because he was late, and she was worried. Then, it just cuts out on a scene of him on the ground bleeding out and reaching for the phone and the bad guy/girl’s foot stepping into view. Then black. Whomever thought stopping there was a good idea is a massive asshole!”

17. “Once Upon a Time.”

“The show had already gone down the drain after the Frozen tie-in (and then all the other advertisements in future seasons), but Season 7…there is no Season 7.”

—CalydorEstalon

18. “Designated Survivor. That show was so freakin’ good. Netflix took it over for Season 3, and it was a totally different experience. Awful, ruined so many characters.”

19. “The end of Dexter is the most soul-destroying thing ever. So bad.”

“Even more disappointing was the Dexter revamp season they did this last year. it actually had a lot of promise, and the first few episodes were good, but then, it was like the writers were like, ‘Gotcha again!'”

20. “Pretty Little Liars.”

“I didn’t even make it to the final season. First season was great, and it slowly went downhill from there. I ended up Googling the ending because I just couldn’t stick it out.”

21. And finally: “Game of Thrones had the entire world in its hands. Everyone fucking talked about that bloody show back then. But their last season was so bad no one talks about it. Massive fumble.”

HBO / Via youtube.com

“I know it’s the obvious, but it’s the obvious answer for a reason.

“There were inpidual moments at the time that worked, but the larger context did not support those moments. They no longer felt earned because the ending of the show became so rushed and condensed. What would normally take the show episodes to set up would instead be shown over the course of a single scene or two as they focused on the spectacle.

House of the Dragon feels like a huge homecoming for me. It has all the politicking and intrigue that I loved about the early seasons, and I’m so happy to see something that is leaning back into what made GoT so great.

“Also, as a random aside, I’m still salty over how badly they mismanaged Dorne in GoT.”
