Now Playing: Dwayne Johnson Explains BLACK ADAM Ending: What's Next?

Of course, in the climactic battle, Dr. Fate sacrifices himself, saving Hawkman (Aldis Hodge) from having to die as Fate previously saw happening in the future. Is he actually dead, though? According to Brosnan, himself, he has the same question. “We don’t know,” he admitted. “I said the same thing when I read the script, but who knows? It’s all a mystery.”

While it will likely remain a mystery for some time to come, it’s not as if it would be the first time a death didn’t stick in a comic book movie. Even Superman died in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice–and he’s not even a wizard. Meanwhile, “[Fate] was the greatest sorcerer that has ever manifested himself in the comic book world,” Brosnan said.

Whatever the case, the actor is deeply thankful for getting to participate in Black Adam, adding, “This is definitely the most beautiful film that I’ve been part of for a long time. It really is. And the camaraderie and the sentiment of all the actors and the hard work that I saw unfold every day was bedazzling.”

Interestingly, though, there was a different version of the movie at one point, at least at the script stage. According to Hodge, there was a version of Black Adam that spent even more time developing the relationship between Hawkman and Dr. Fate.

“It was about the values of what it was supposed to represent,” Hodge said. “So [director Jaume Collet-Serra] really wanted to push into more of that relationship being on screen when they saw you.”

As it stands, the final version of the movie makes it absolutely clear that Fate and Hawkman have a deeply linked past as two longtime members of the Justice Society. That said, why not give us a prequel about the early days of their team?

Black Adam is in theaters now.
