Jin From “BTS” Has Released A Solo Track — Here’s Everything To Know About Him

With the release of his single “The Astronaut” on October 28, Jin became the second member of BTS (after J-Hope) to officially release music as part of the group’s primarily solo-driven Chapter 2.

Each song was an adaptation — “A Typical Trainee’s Christmas” was based on Kanye West’s “Christmas in Harlem” and Wham!’s “Last Christmas,” “School of Tears” was adapted from Kendrick Lamar’s “Swimming Pools (Drank),” and “Adult Child” was based on Common’s “Celebrate.” While “A Typical Trainee’s Christmas” explored the group’s struggles as idol trainees, “School of Tears” and “Adult Child” both focused on teen growing pains, giving a taste of the themes the group would explore when they officially debuted in June 2013 with the single “No More Dream” off the album 2 Cool 4 Skool

While the bulk of BTS songs feature all seven members of the group in some way, they also often release sub-unit songs as well as solos. On the group’s second album O!RUL8,2?, Jin took part in a track by the vocal line sub-unit (that is, the vocalists of the group — Jimin, Jungkook, and V), “Outro: Luv in Skool.”

At the end of 2013, Jin also teamed up with Suga, J-Hope, V, and Jimin to release “A Typical Idol’s Christmas,” a followup to “A Typical Trainee’s Christmas” that was adapted from Justin Bieber’s “Only Thing I Ever Get for Christmas.”

The next few years saw BTS continue to focus on coming-of-age themes, with Jin participating in group tracks as well as vocal unit tracks like “Outro: Propose,” “Outro: Do You Think It Makes Sense?” and “Outro: Love Is Not Over,” the latter of which Jin co-wrote.

Other vocal unit tracks Jin participated in include “House of Cards,” “Butterfly (Prologue Mix),” “Lost,” “Dimple,” “The Truth Untold,” and “00:00 (Zero O’Clock).”

Jin has also featured on a bunch of other sub-unit songs featuring different combinations of BTS members, including “It’s Definitely You” with V for the Hwarang K-drama soundtrack, “So Far Away” with Suga and Jungkook, “Jamais Vu” with J-Hope and Jungkook, and “Stay” with RM and Jungkook.

Jin co-wrote “Stay” for the 2020 album Be, and it touches on a recurrent theme in his writing — his enduring affection for and appreciation of his fans.

In addition to his collabs with BTS members, Jin has also taken part in sub-unit collaborations with external artists, such as “Dream Glow” with Charli XCX alongside Jimin and Jungkook for the BTS World mobile game soundtrack, as well as “Bad Decisions,” a collaboration between Benny Blanco, Snoop Dogg, and the BTS vocal line members.

On the solo front, Jin started his journey in 2015 by releasing a couple of covers of songs that were meaningful to him: Ra.D’s “Mom” and Mate’s “I Love You.”

Jin also released “Awake (Christmas version)” later in 2016 as a gift to fans for his birthday.

He followed that up with another emotional ballad, “Epiphany,” in 2018 for BTS’s Love Yourself album series, which told a narrative of falling in love and experiencing a toxic relationship, before finally breaking free. “Epiphany” explores the last act, focusing on learning to love yourself.

Big Hit Music / BangtanTV / Via youtube.com According to Chris Martin, Jin contacted him to request his help with a song to express his love for fans ahead of his military service. The result is “The Astronaut,” which picks up on the themes present not only in “My Universe” but also Jin’s previous solo track “Moon.”

Jin got to perform “The Astronaut” at Coldplay’s concert in Argentina the day after the song was released, and it was a fitting first performance as well as a farewell (for now) — which you can watch in full in the video above.
