Champions League exit a factor in his decision

Pique is said to have been considering retirement for a while, but opted to stay on at the club this season in the belief he could win his place as a regular starter back.

The draw with Inter Milan, in which he was heavily criticised for errors leading to goals, all but mathematically ruined Barca’s hopes of progressing to the Champions League knock-out stages.

                        <p>Their drop to the Europa League - for a second season in succession - was confirmed when Inter beat Viktoria Plzen 4-0 last week, leaving Barca to face Bayern Munich in a dead rubber later that night.
