Movies based on video games: your champion

We are now into the thick of fall, with leaves dropping from the trees almost as quickly as the mercury on your thermometer plummets. Yes, we must admit summer is over, and it’s time to take it on the chin. We pack those picnic blankets and beachwear, swapping them for cosy nights watching TV, live sport and maybe even your favourite sports betting sites. It’s an expensive time of year, after all. But what movies should you watch? That is the question that has already ruined many a promising night. And it never seems to get any easier.

We’ve all been there. You settle down for the evening, set up Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime or your favourite movie streaming site. You’re all set for a thrilling night escaping to the wonder of movieland, only for your mind to go blank. What to watch? You lazily scroll through the options. Most popular, recently watched, highest ranked, recommended. You find nothing that takes your fancy.

Things get desperate
Now things start to get desperate. Picking a movie to watch – a task you had budgeted five minutes for – is now becoming desperate. You begin to worry, frantically looking for a solid decision, one that could make or break your night. The evening hangs on a knife edge. Pick well, and you’ll be glued to your sofa for the next two hours. Make an error of judgement, and it could be a wasted night. Knowing time is running out, you click.

You’ve hedged your bets and gone with a movie you know and trust. Such a shame, but it doesn’t need to be that way. Perhaps you should have been a little bolder and combined your love for movies with a passion for gaming, especially retro gaming. Some fantastic movies are based on classic video games, and another huge name is about to return to the screen.

On this page, we bring you a list of our favourite movies that are based on video games. Some are classics, while others are new and aim to become classics in future. Which titles made it onto our list? Read on to find out.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu
There are a few Pokemon-based movies and feature cartoons, but most were made during the first wave of Pokemon mania. If you don’t have kids of your own and haven’t noticed, Pokemon is back in schools, and it’s back bigger than ever. Imagine when Pokemon trading cards first landed in school playgrounds. Now multiply that with the madness of social media and modern marketing.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu is a more modern movie released in 2019, and despite facing tough competition from Angry Birds 2, it still smashed all expectations at the box office. This title features Ryan Renolds and Justice Smith, directed by Rob Letterman.

Sonic The Hedgehog
Who doesn’t love Sonic? The console game still pulls in a crowd, with older gamers loving the retro and original titles, with younger Sonic fans sticking to the newer, more modern stuff. We have two major Sonic The Hedgehog movies to choose from, but which is best, Sonic 1 or Sonic 2? That’s for you to decide.

Both are fantastic family movies for all ages, and you’ll lose nothing if you prefer to second movie to the first or jump in and watch only one. They’re great fun, fast-paced and easy to watch. Sit down with a young gamer or old gaming friend and enjoy Sonic 2022 style. If you followed the little blue hedgehog from birth, you’d love meeting the walking, talking Sonic, who has bags of attitude.

Tomb Raider
The movies mentioned above are huge hits, but they’d do well to reach the dizzy heights set by Tomb Raider, who made Lara Croft a sensation. Released in 2018, Tomb Raider stars Alicia Vikander and Dominic West, directed by Roar Uthaug.

The chances are, you’ll already know Lara Croft and her story, but you’d be wrong. This movie introduces her to a more modern, grounded and realistic version. The Queen of gaming now has a more believable and relatable backstory without losing any of the action or attraction.
