Union unrest as Equity attempts to rush through rule book re-write

“Let’s not return to the dark ages.”

A broad and diverse group of Equity members are reaching out to their fellow members via the media in an urgent call for increased visibility and debate around a wholesale rewrite of the Equity rule book:

Consisting as we do of a wide variety of ages and political opinions, we fear that many other members of our longstanding trade union for the performing arts and entertainment industries remain unaware of the implications of the proposed rule changes. Furthermore, we are concerned that some senior members of Equity are rushing through a referendum to change the rule book without proper representative consultation and with far-reaching consequences.

We are voicing a number of vital concerns, including the proposed omission of assurances around members’ political and religious beliefs and freedom of artistic expression. We also feel the situation is a disturbing reflection of current Westminster happenings, where the dangers of unchecked power are all too clearly illustrated. Equity’s proposed new rules drastically reduce existing democratic checks and balances – transferring power away from ordinary members of the union.

We are bound by our common concern for the future of Equity as a members-led union and see urging our fellow members to vote against the new proposals as a positive act:

“Avenues for dissenting voices are shut down and the average member is not aware of the implications of these rule changes. The new rules will only be revealed to the membership a few days before voting starts. Equity should be a broad church union; inclusive, democratic, respectful – led by and run for the benefit of those who pay their subscriptions. Right now, Equity runs the risk of becoming a sham democracy.”

Those voicing concern include Miriam Margoyles, Lord Michael Cashman (former cast member of “EastEnders” and member of the House of Lords), Malcolm Sinclair (former Equity President), John Carnegie (longest-serving Theatre Directors’ Councillor), Helen Fox (Artistic Director of Fox and Hound Theatre), Michael Mackenzie (Equity Honorary Life Member) and Ayvianna Snow, independent film actress.
