Mike Tyson would ‘KO five guys in an hour’ so he could go home to watch Tom and Jerry

Legendary boxer Mike Tyson was so keen to watch Tom and Jerry he would knock out five guys in an hour to ensure he was home for his favourite cartoon. Iron Mike was so destructive in the ring but was equally so in training.

Unlike the current days of recording TV shows with the click of a button, Tyson needed to make it home in time if he wanted to catch up with the shenanigans. He often turned a planned five-hour sparring session into less than 60 brutal minutes so he could watch the famous cat and mouse duo duke it out.

This is according to Tyson’s confidante, ex bodyguard and chauffeur Rudy Gonzalez, who witnessed many of the former world heavyweight champion’s exploits in the ring. Speaking last year, Gonzalez told The Sun: “When we trained in Vegas his sparring sessions were from 12 to 5pm.

"He would be the nicest guy beforehand asking the sparring partners: 'How you doing today, how’s the family?' Then he would just knock five guys out so within an hour there was nobody left. I saw him punch the heavy bag so hard it broke a few times from the chains and the other boxers would just leave saying: ‘We are not f****** with you today. I do not care how much money you pay me.’

"Anyone who felt they were up for taking him on, he would hit them and they'd snap. Soon after they would pack their bags. So one day I asked: ‘Boss I am confused, isn’t this about working on techniques?' He replied: ‘If I keep it going we will miss Tom and Jerry cartoons.’" Tyson's love of cartoons has continued into his later life, and he even created his own for TV.

Mike Tyson Mysteries ran for four seasons in the US, and is based on an animated version of himself who solves mysteries after retiring from boxing, in the style of Scooby-Doo. After debuting on Adult Swim in 2014, the series was a hit with fans until it was cancelled in 2020.

Tyson had wowed fans by proving he can still be devastating in the ring despite his advancing years in his Instagram video last month. The former epic knockout artist made a comeback in November 2020 for an exhibition bout against Roy Jones Jr and still has speed and ruthless aggression on the pads.

Tyson recently discussed his dream opponent on his podcast but rather than a boxing great, he opted for Greek God "Achilles”. Tyson was completely adamant over his admission as he believes the Greek god is 'the greatest warrior ever' and 'as close to God as possible'.

"With fighting, it all comes down to spirit," he said, insisting that the mark of a true fighter is spiritual as well as physical. Tyson even speculated about making a trip to Greece in an attempt to visit Achilles' tomb as the conversation turned towards Iron Mike's fascination with gladiatorial battles in the ancient world.
