Anthony Joshua bigs up Deontay Wilder fight for 2023 with American ‘more than ready’

Anthony Joshua has claimed Deontay Wilder is primed to fight him in 2023. The ‘Bronze Bomber’ returned to the ring last month and wasted no time dispatching Robert Helenius with a first round knockout.

AJ, 33, who is currently taking a break from boxing after two devastating losses to Oleksandr Uysk, is interested in fighting Wilder and believes it will come to fruition. He told iFL TV: “I think now, he is on a resurgence. I think he is realising that he has got three years left, so he wants to kind of tick off his hit list. Yeah, it will happen now, he’s more than ready now. Why not?"

During the chat, the former heavyweight champion outlined his fight plans and mindset moving forward. “When I’m ready to ride again I’ll ride out proper, we’ll ride until the wheels fall off,” the boxer said. “I’ve got myself a timeframe, a duration, I got a hitlist and we’ll rock and roll. Everyone’s an option, even that bin man over there’s an option!”

Joshua eyes a return next March as he recharges his batteries after talks for a blockbuster December title clash with Tyson Fury broke down. In the interview Joshua also explained why he is not Fury's opponent at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next month. “Deadlines weren’t met. Simplistic forms, deadlines weren’t met," he explained. "Fury wanted to fight on a certain date and when you’re dealing with a situation that’s so big, it’s not a simple fight, it’s a big fight.

“I could go into further detail, but basically, it probably did need a little bit more time. The deadline he set for someone of my capacity wasn’t fit for the date he had in mind and it didn’t work out.”

Promoter Eddie Hearn also explained why Joshua vs Fury did not go ahead after the promoter was heckled by a boxing fan. Speaking at a live Q&A on iFL TV, Hearn responded: “I knew we were going to get blamed, but basically what happened is Anthony Joshua lost to Oleksandr Usyk, we all saw that mentally that was a tough defeat for him. Tyson Fury does what Tyson Fury does, stuck the bait out there for AJ, called him out and AJ told me ‘I want the fight’.

“Should he have accepted the fight? Maybe not at that moment. But ultimately he is the boss, and he wanted to fight Tyson Fury.

“We started negotiations – it actually went quite well – and then as things are going well Tyson Fury pops up on Instagram and says we have to sign the contract by the end of the day. I think people over the last couple of weeks have seen maybe a different side to him, but he is still a very clever Tyson Fury.”

He added: "Tyson Fury, although he is a little bit up and down and I don’t believe everything he says, he is a tremendous fighter. For me the Anthony Joshua fight, is a fight that has to happen, it does.”
