Britain’s richest man ‘drops all interest’ in buying Man Utd – but seriously wanted deal

Britain's richest man Jim Ratcliffe no longer has any interest in buying Manchester United despite being keen on a deal in the summer.

Ratcliffe, who's worth a staggering £10.9 billion, made a pitch for United after missing out on Chelsea to Todd Boehly earlier this year. The 69-year-old even met with United's owners, The Glazers, who he described as 'perfect gentleman', but was unable to entice them into selling – unless he coughed up £10bn.

However, the English plutocrat was unwilling to depart with the chunk of his wealth and hasn't made any efforts to acquire the club since then. And now, it's been revealed that Ratcliffe's dropped all interest in the Red Devils, according to the United Journal's Twitter account.

A main reason why his interest has waned is because he's focused on turning French side Nice into football powerhouses. Ratcliffe brought the Ligue 1 outfit in 2019 for £91million through his company, Ineos. And after losing out on Chelsea, Ratcliffe reckons Nice provide better returns than Premier League teams such as Liverpool, who were put on the market by owners Fenway Sports Group this week.

Explaining his stance to the Telegraph, Ratcliffe said: "Our position has developed since the summer and we are now focusing our efforts in Nice and raising our ambitions for the club to make them into a top tier club in France to compete with PSG. This would represent much better value for our investment than buying one of the top tier Premier League clubs."

Ratcliffe's not the only uber rich party that's wanted, then revoked interest in United. The Red Devils were also rumoured to be on the list of Newcastle's Saudi Arabian owners. However, the Public Investment Fund group declined an offer of £700m to buy a stake in United, and opted to acquire the Magpies for £300million instead.
