Boxing icon Butterbean once accidentally knocked out referee with a brutal right-hook
When Eric 'Butterbean' Esch fought Pat Jackson in a boxing contest in 1995 – no one knew at the time that it will go down in history for one moment in particular.
Facing off against his fellow American in 1995 at the Pontchartrain Center, Louisiana, the giant fighter went for a right hook to his opponent.
Only the official, trying to break up the fight, was in the way – and it sent him flying to the canvas. Those outside the ring rushed in and the referee was able to get to his feet once more. But, strangely, Jackson decided to call it quits after the incident, meaning Butterbean won via forfeit.

Online, plenty have commented about the fight. One wrote: "I’ll never forget when “Butterbean” knocked out a referee (on accident) in the 3rd round of a fight and his opponent said “oh, f*** that” and quit."
Another commented on the current standard of officiating: "The way some of these referees operate it's almost like they took a couple of Butterbean shots to the head."
A third wrote: "That's almost as fast as Butterbean KO'd Bart Gunn at Wrestlemania XV."
Butterbean is a former professional boxer who's well-known for his larger-than-life size. But his career only started by chance. During the 1990s, when he worked as a manufacturer in Alabama, a colleague of his dared Butterbean to compete in a Toughman competition.
But at the time he weighed over 400 pounds, meaning he was prohibited by the competition.
As a result, he went on a strict diet that mostly consisted of chicken and butterbeans – which is how he came about his unique nickname.
Butterbean fought 91 times, winning 77 times, with ten losses – retiring in 2013.
Since then, he has appeared at WWE WrestleMania, on the Jackass film, and featured on The Tonight Show as well other reality TV shows.
