Fans rip ‘clown’ Graeme Souness to shreds over defending Cristiano Ronaldo

Fans have ripped "clown" Graeme Souness to shreds on social media after he came to the defence of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo has been largely slammed by supporters online after he admitted he felt "betrayed" by Manchester United in an explosive interview with Piers Morgan. However, Souness has been one of few people to come to the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's defence on Monday as he “has a grievance and he is entitled to air it”.

Appearing on talkSPORT, Souness discussed the interview with Jim White and was asked by the presenter: “Surely you can no longer defend him after this?!”

Souness responded by explaining: “I certainly do. I’ll come back to, it was a meeting, two people speak, two people leave the room with an understanding and someone has not kept their word.

“He feels it’s time for him. He’s never spoken, maybe he feels it’s time for him to come out and tell his side of the story. This is a player, who arguably, in many people’s eyes, is the greatest to have ever kicked a ball.”

Fans have since savaged Souness' comments on social media, with one tweeting: “Dinosaur Souness strikes again.” Another simply added: “Clown.”

Meanwhile, a third commented: “Piers Morgan and Graeme Souness defending Ronaldo tells you everything you need to know. They are all massive whoppers.” Another tweeted: “Anything to stay relevant, aye Graeme.”

One more wrote: “Don’t remember Graeme saying the same about the interview Bellamy gave back when they were at NUFC.”

Despite the backlash, the former Liverpool captain went on to add: “I think with him, he has been told a story and the manager’s not kept it. Then you look at what’s happened after this so-called ‘agreement’.

"He doesn’t bring him on against City, manager’s asked, ‘oh it’s out of respect’. A couple of weeks later, he wanted him to go on with two minutes to go against Tottenham when the game’s won. What can Ronaldo do there? And then he makes him captain.

"For me looking at it from the outside, from both sides, I’ve been a player, I’ve been a manager, I think the player has a grievance and I think he’s entitled to air his grievance.”
