Cristiano Ronaldo told Piers Morgan he wants to keep playing until he's aged 40 in his explosive interview about Manchester United.

A teaser for their 90-minute chat, which is set to air in two parts on Wednesday and Thursday this week, has already sent the football world into meltdown, with several shocking comments from Ronaldo emerging.

Morgan appeared on talkSPORT this morning (November 14) to discuss the fallout and explain the background to the interview. He gave some insight into Ronaldo's intentions and revealed the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's plans for retirement.

“I think part of the timing for him was that he wanted to do this before he went off to the World Cup," Morgan said. "It gives him a month away from United, and it gives United time to think about what they want to do, and for him and his people to think about what they want to do.

"There’s a very good chance that Ronaldo has a very good World Cup, in which case it’ll be the best shop window for him to get what he really wants, which is to be at a competitive team in the Champions League which can allow him to play at the highest level for a couple more years. He wants to retire around 40, he said to me."

Ronaldo turns 38 in February meaning he has just over two years left before his self-imposed deadline. His United career looks to be dead and buried after accusing the club of "betraying" him.

A January move might now be on the cards, but Ronaldo's options appear to be limited – just as they were in the summer when he had his agent Jorge Mendes sounding out potential suitors.

There was a severe lack of interested parties back then, with clubs seemingly put off by how Ronaldo's return to Old Trafford has unfolded. And his bombshell interview likely won't have won him any more admirers.

Another return, this time to his first club Sporting, appears the most likely option, although they can only offer him Europa League football like United.
