Roy Keane wrong to defend Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘unacceptable’ behaviour says Wayne Rooney

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has suggested that he doesn't think Roy Keane should've leaped to Cristiano Ronaldo’s defence earlier this season.

The Portuguese superstar, 37, has only just managed to get himself back into Erik ten Hag’s good books, after refusing to come on as a substitute before storming off during United’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur last month. Ten Hag excluded him from the squad that drew 1-1 at Chelsea as a means of enforcing rules at the club.

However, their relationship appears to be heading in the right direction after Ten Hag recently gave him the captain’s armband in Harry Maguire’s absence. Rooney has now entered into the constant debate around Ronaldo by questioning his former captain's defence of the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.

“No, I don’t think so,” Rooney said on talkSPORT when asked if United were a better team with Ronaldo. “Him and Messi are arguably the two best players of all-time and you can go either way with that, whatever way you decide.

“But I just think the things he has done from the start of the season, it is not acceptable for Manchester United. I’ve seen Roy Keane defending him.

“Roy wouldn’t accept that. Roy wouldn’t accept that at all. It is a distraction which Manchester United don’t need at the minute, trying to rebuild.

“For Cristiano, just get your head down and work. Be ready to play when the manager needs you. If he does that, he will be an asset. If he doesn’t, it will become an unwanted distraction.”

Ronaldo has only scored one Premier League goal in ten appearances for the Red Devils this season, but he has contributed two goals and two assist in six Europa League appearances.

If passed fit, will likely be called upon when United travel to west London to face a very dangerous Fulham side at Craven Cottage.
