‘Declining’ Cristiano Ronaldo not being ‘forced out’ – history will ‘remember him well’

Cristiano Ronaldo is not being forced out of Manchester United – despite his claims during a bombshell interview with Piers Morgan – and history will remember him well at Old Trafford.

That is according to the editor of the acclaimed United We Stand magazine Andy Mitten, who says Red Devils fans wouldn't be "hugely concerned" if Ronaldo didn't play for United again.

Mitten was speaking in the wake of Ronaldo's shock interview on Sunday night, when he accused the club of "betraying" him and admitted he has no respect for boss Erik ten Hag.

Addressing Ronaldo's claim that he is being "forced out" of Old Trafford, Mitten told BBC Radio 5 Live: "He's not being forced out of the club. He wanted to leave the club in the summer and thought he was leaving the club.

"There was a shortage of suitors willing to pay the type of money he earns at Man Utd. He's done this interview where it's his version of the truth, and in football and in life there's often more than one version of the truth.

"He's clearly very frustrated and some of the points he makes are absolutely valid – when he's being critical of Manchester United not investing in infrastructure for example, and there are other areas he could have expanded on there.

"He stopped short of the people who pay his wages or oversee that, but I don't think Man Utd fans will be hugely concerned if he didn't play for the club again."

If these are to be the final months of Ronaldo as a United player, he will depart Old Trafford as three-time Premier League and one-time Champions League winner.

Despite the fallout from his interview with Morgan, which is sure to continue over the coming days and weeks, Mitten believes fans will still looking back fondly on his days at the club.

"I think history will remember him well," he continued. "This happens all the time with footballers, just none quite as high profile as Ronaldo.

"Can you imagine what it would have been like in the 70s when George Best, who now has a statue at Old Trafford, was making all his missteps when he was missing training – something Ronaldo has never done to be fair to him.

"It's almost always an unedifying end to your time at Manchester United, whether it's Roy Keane or Cristiano Ronaldo. I've spoken to so many players and it takes them five or 10 years to get their head around the fact they've basically been rejected.

"They felt they were worth another year or two years at the time, and they're actually trying to come to terms with the fact their talent is declining. That's happening to Ronaldo."

Mitten added that while Ronaldo is probably the best player he's ever seen at United, he's not the player he used to be. He added Ten Hag has been forced to make difficult decisions on Ronaldo, having watched the previous two incumbents of the Old Trafford hotseat fall by the wayside.
