NBA stars left baffled after ball gets stuck on rim in two separate matches

On a somewhat strange night in the NBA, the ball got stuck on the rim in two different matches. Early in the second quarter of New York Nicks’ home clash with the Detroit Pistons, Derrick Rose drove to the rim and attempted a layup.

The players looked up expecting the ball to drop through the hoop, but instead stayed on top of it, to the disappointment of the 2011 MVP who ran back up the court. Staying on the east coast of America, Grant Williams of the Boston Celtics took a free throw deep into the fourth quarter against the Denver Nuggets.

The 23-year-old released the ball only to see the ball bounce off the rim and nestle in the corner in between the backboard and rim. Williams held his free throw pose long after release, perhaps in disbelief that the ball got stuck on the rim.

Fortunately for both teams the incidents did little to impact their performance as the Knicks, who were winning by five points at the time of the bizarre moment, secured a 121-112 victory. RJ Barrett led the way with 30 points, five rebounds and five assists as the Knicks secured a vital win and currently sit seventh in the Eastern conference.

The Celtics were up 13 points before Williams’ free throw attempt, and went on to secure a comfortable 19 point win and their fifth in a row. Williams registered 13 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Jason Tatum continued his fine season with a statline of 34 points, five assists and eight rebounds.

They’ve lost just three games this season and sit second in the Eastern conference behind their Milwaukee Bucks, who they eliminated from last year’s playoffs in the conference semi-finals. Late last month, Williams was suspended by the NBA after he was adjudged to have run run into a referee after he was called for a foul in a loss to the Chicago Bulls.

Williams had attempted to draw a charge against Zach LaVine, but was called for a blocking foul as he angrily got up with his momentum seemingly taken him towards the way of official Flores, as he ran into her but did not knock the referee over.

In a public statement, he said: "I want to apologise to our players, fans, the entire Celtics organisation, and my family for letting them down.

“I am sorry for putting the team in this difficult situation, and I accept the team's decision. Out of respect for everyone involved, I will have no further comment." Williams served his suspension by sitting out his side’s 132-123 overtime defeat to the Cleveland Cavaliers on October 29.
