Mick Schumacher has been told a year out of an F1 race could be just what he needs as Haas labour over a decision on his future.

The young German has had a tricky second season at the top level of the sport after winning the Formula 2 title in 2020. Schumacher has suffered numerous heavy crashes while his pace has been inconsistent. As a result, he could lose his seat for 2023, with Haas team principal Guenther Steiner insisting he still hasn’t decided on his driver line-up.

“Hopefully next week we can announce something, whatever we are doing," he said ahead of this weekend’s Sao Paulo Grand Prix. “It's my objective, but I don't promise it.”

If Schumacher is dropped, experienced former Williams and Renault driver Nico Hulkenberg will take his place having held talks with the Haas team.

Many people believe that could mean the end of Schumacher’s F1 career but Sky Sports pundit Martin Brundle doesn’t necessarily see it that way.

“It seems as if they [Haas] want to have the two experienced drivers next year,” said Brundle, a former teammate of Mick’s legendary father Michael, ahead of the first practice in Brazil.

“It’s a tough one for Mick. Let’s take some emotion out of it and his surname. Let's put everything to one side.

“Has he done well enough? Has he got enough speed? He has crashed a lot of cars. Is there enough future with Mick?

“Maybe a year out and being a reserve driver, learning and coming back might be good for him. You could look at Haas and say they’ve [potentially] got two experienced drivers [in Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen] – where’s your future? What are you building for? A tough call for them.”

Schumacher made an encouraging start to the weekend by setting the eighth fastest time in the first practice session as Red Bull's Sergio Perez set the pace. As it is a Sprint race weekend, qualifying will take place later this evening.
